Yeah, along w/dips and pushups. Best of all might be dumbell and barbell bench rows, bringing the elbow as far behind the back as possible, and tricep pulldowns (arm extensions) with a bar/pulley.
Yeah, pulling up your milage, pwnd.
I have data to show that the latissimus dorsi (a key shoulder extensor, the main muscle worked with proper pullups) shows a LOT of activity during 5K intensity running... It is likely even greater during shorter distances. And the muscle activity actually shows fatigue related changes, similar to those of the legs, during running.
The lat functions to pull the shoulder back, helping to move the momentum of the arm downwards. This creates greater downward force transferred through the whole body to the ground. By the laws of physics, this creates an equal and opposite reaction (ground reaction force) which will eventual propel the body upward. Thus arm movement contributes to the vertical component of running. For a scientific reference, this was published by Hinrcihs in 1988.
Though is has not been studied whether pull-ups will help improve running performance, theoretically it can, based on putting these results together. Concentrate on working the lats, and make sure you get the last part of the motion (go up all the way) to get as much shoulder extension as possible.
Hope that helps!
agreed. pullups, chinups, dips, and pushups, along with core work will help.
