Where will you be staying? I'd check out the Lakeshore paths on the north edge of campus, starting just to the west of the Union and going a fair distance west from there, if you'll be anywhere on or near campus. There's quite a bit of trail running to be had if you check out the side paths on the trail to Picnic Point (which you can Google Earth). Also, the Arboretum is freaking huge. To find that from campus, go south on Park Street and turn right onto Haywood Drive.
From that you should be able to figure out how to get to the Arboretum from where you are, using Google Earth or the gmaps pedometer with the satellite photos turned on. (Google Earth is better.)
lake monona is a good longish run, about 13 miles. it goes around the 2nd biggest lake in the city. the route isn't the clearest, though--there are some small arrows painted on the street.
If the Arb is clear, I'd run out there... best place to train in madison. If not, the zoo lake loop is pretty nice.
Do they let you run in the Arboretum? Last time I was in Madison, a was eating a sandwich whilst writing in a notebook, just enjoying the sunshine, and some employee/official person came up and told me (firmly) there was no eating in the Arboretum, that it was a place for studying nature.
So, is running okay there?
of course running is ok there. that's were UW cross team trains if its clear.
by "clear" i think you mean "free of snow" right?
If that's what he means, then it's clear - ran there recently, even before we had those two 75+ degree days.
