Wow!
What great experience!
Insurance = NCAA sports now eh?
Oh those ducks...
Since it appears that Kilkenny was responsible for raising the funds to get rid of Moos, not sure what kind of congratulations to the good ol' boy network you are looking for here Mike.
This certainly confirms that college sports is all business.
Ya know, as I read that release, it seemed to be saying that Oregon was going to be cutting some sports and that this guy would be able to present it in a just-business light.
I'd like to be wrong, but I don't think so...
Of course, as long as Phil K. is a major donor we can probably expect men's t&f/x-c to stay on the roster.
Athletic departments are big business. You need a person at the top that knows how to fund raise and manage money. You are going to see fewer and fewer football coaches becoming athletic directors unless the department has an associate director who is going to do those duties.
For instance, when Vince Dooley (UGA, my alma mater) stepped down the fellow who replaced him, while being a former UGA football player, had gotten a master's in business and worked in the AD. He reorganized the office (getting rid of some long time employees) and has continued to lead the athletic department deep into the financial black.
I doubt Barry Alvarez is scouring the budget at UW; he is there to give speeches and glad hand the alumni.
Oregon sucks.
Getting an insurance guy whose only experince is with San Diego state is great move.
Awsome football season. Maybe this weekend the overrated basketball team will go O for SF like it went O for LA.
Is it just me or did the people bashing on this decision not read the reasoning? This guys seems more than qualified. He is a good buisnessman, yes. He has experience working with Athletic Directors, he has worked with the UO AD when he was at school there, he works for sports in San Diego... He seems like a great choice for the school.
Internet information can be incorrect, but from my research I am seeing that Kilkenny attended U of O from 1970-1974, but did not graduate with a degree.
If that is true, it does not look sound to have a leadership position filled at a College of Higher Education to someone who does not hold a college degree. perhaps my research is incorrect, maybe someone can verify this.
Why doesn't Oregon just give the position to Phil Knight and get it over with....
His bio sounds a lot like Bill Martin, who has been the AD at the University of Michigan since 2000.

Did Bill Martin donate 1.8 million to get the existing AD fired?
I don't think so (actually don't really care, big time NCAA athletics is big time business, and is not for the fant of heart). The previous AD got himself fired and probably should not have been hired in the first place.

Sounds like a Genius!

No need to. There is a guy in the AD department that talks with Phil everyday to give him a daily update.

"Athletic departments are big business."
No sh!t genius.
Athletics are big business, a fairly specific type of big business that has little to do with the insurance industry.
Oregon needed someone with NCAA experience and vision, not some fat a$$ed hick with some spare dough.
You are an idiot.

I love it. The guys sounds like an extremely successful biz man. Track will remain strong and I bet they even cut a sport to increase scholarships. Don't be surpised.
Oregon is going out and getting what it wants, don't be jealous of that. Actually, if you think this is a bad move, and you hate Oregon, then why are you still so bitter?
I heard it came down to the wire with him and this guy:
I can't believe none of you have questioned what this means for Vin Lananna. I am sure he was gunning for that position. I don't think he will stay at Oregon to just coach. I think he had higher aspirations going in and will get disillusioned and leave.
