I never thought of Oregon as dangerous, people dying and getting stranded. Oregonians whats up ? Is Oregon that dangerous or was it bad luck or bad moves.
Do these these latest two have any chance ?

Actually, I know the guys sons. I work with them. I don't know the whole story yet, but from what I hear, it was just an accident. I'll post more as soon as I know more.
From the horses mouth:
A friend of mine was part of the Eugene Mountain Rescue that volunteered to search for the family. With respect to the privacy of the family; I will tell you this. The family made a right turn off the road they had been following and passed through a gate that had been vandalized and destroyed by hunters that the BLM folks had closed and locked on November 1st of this year. It's closed before the weather gets bad because the road is remote and usually impassable.
Bottom line, they were lost. But if that gate is closed like it should of been, they don't go down that road and get as lost as they were. Chances are, this might not of escalated into what it did.
Also, the victim chose to leave his family to go and find help. Two schools of thought on whether that was right or wrong.
It's a very sad story, and a terrible loss for the Kim family.

How bout the latest two ?
Interesting article on cnn today. Without being too critical it makes some good points about how they got that far off course even with the locked gate being missing. It must have been a case of "Let's just go a little bit farther and we'll get where we're trying to go."
All is good and well with the CNN article, but what they don't mention is that they were on the road during normal daylight hours...while the Kims were driving in a blizzard. The visibility was so bad that Kim had to roll down the window to look out and see where they were going....not surprising that he missed the warning signs.

This story is not as bad as this one.
http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/archive/2006/December/01/local/stories/01local.htmIf anyone has visited the santa cruz mountains knows how easy it is to orient yourself in these mountains. One night of long hiking can get you out of them. You are 30 miles from the ocean if you hike west and maybe 10 to a giant road if you hike east.
The Fall does not pose life-threatening weather anywhere in the bay area.
People take chances and lose sometimes more often than not. Jon Jon Kennedy, Lance Armstrong, etc., and now Mr. Kim.
Keep your wits about you, anticipate, think things through, "there are bold pilots and there are old pilots but there are no old and bold pilots", etc., etc., etc.
it is phil knight and nike's fault
I am suprised that people in oregon hunt and hike and drive in the mountains. I thought all they did was run or smoke meth.
