Some wise men from letsrun once told me:
ad-aware from lavasoft
spybot
Excellent resource...
"Spybot: Search & Destroy"
probably the best out there, been around for a while, plus it automatically updates itself....that sort of thing.
just google it, heaps of sites offer it as a free download
SpyWareBlaster from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/
to detect spyware/adware there are 2 rograms you should use regularly.
1) adaware -
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
get it from this site. there is another "adaware" program out there that may INSTALL spyware. that program is trying to trick people into installing it, instead of the "good one."
adaware is free, but you can buy the addon that constantly scans your computer for ad/spyware.
2) spybot -
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
also a good one. i have BOTH on my computer and run them once a week or so. they appear to scan for many of the same things, but there are somethings one gets that the other does not.
i have never had any problems with either of these programs.
make sure you have an anti-virus program AND THAT YOU UPDATE THE DATA FILE REGULARLY.
last, i would drop explorer and use firefox for your browser. this will also help in protecting your computer from spyware.
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
all of these programs are free.
Also use thunderbird for email it's opensource, subject to review and fixes by millions of software engineers worldwide. Fire microshit outlook, closed and full of holes and bugs.
