I was just thinking, if I were a marketing exec at Hyundai, I might think, why don't we hire a ringer. We'll say that we'll take care of his family if anything happens, and if he takes responsibility, there'll be a nice little balance at an offshore account, that is, if he does his time and keeps quiet. All the guy has to do is drive like a bat out of hell, to the applause of the rebel audience at heart, and Hyundai reaps the free publicity form a bonafide credible street test of pure raw speed.
Well keep thinking past the glory and towards the bad publicity when the 147mph driver kills someone, possibly even himself. Nice theory, though.

Well it is wikipedia after all, not always accurate.
"Recently a man was caught doing 177 mph in a rental Sonata which is often discussed in enthusiast forums."
I don't at all believe the 177 mph top speed at all.

Maybe it'll reach 177 on a dry day with a really light person, the seats taken out, no A/C, and down a really steep hill. I applaud this man for being the a daredevil by driving over 90mph in a Hyundai sonata, a feat by itself.
Seems pretty fast, but since I've had my Ford Windstar minivan over 100 MPH once addidentally (going DOWN a long straight hill in Maryland once along with traffic that was going at the same speed), and it seemed like nothing, I don't doubt that a Sonata could go that fast.

Do you realize how fast 177 is! First, it's not geared to go that fast. Second, it doesn't have enough horsepower to go that fast. Third, the tires aren't designed to go that fast. No way that a Sonata goes that fast.
A majority of the "performace" cars out there top out around 150-160. A 290 hp Mazdaspeed3 will go about 155 mph. Every mph above that requires WAY lots of hp. Seriously, a Sonata, even with the V6 is only rocking, what, 200 hp if your lucky. No way man, no way.
Personal responsibility....I thought that the "I do what I want and the Guvment should mind it's own business" philosophy only worked if what you did wasn't going to impact MY ability to do what I want. You want to drive 150 mph on the highway because you want to, but I want to drive on the highway without some c***rag causing a fatal accident. Think about it: is your right to do what you want more important the my right to be not dead?
And what part of driving 150 mph on a public, urban road is responcable? And doesn't the government get SOME say over what happens on the raods it builds? Sure, tax money pays for some of it, but it's not like you were going to organize the construction yourself.
This is one of the reasons I'm often a little sceptical (sp) of libertarians. As a philosophy, it's something I don't really agree with; but too often it seems like an excuse used by people who want to be stupid and not get in trouble.

Original story said 147, not 177. 177 is beyond believing.
My thinking is that making a car able to go 150mph means it will likely be more effecient at slower speeds.

I looked at the wiki article too. Those claims about 177 mph are complete BS.
They talk about some special 543? HP, 5.4 Liter V8 that is offered for some models???? wow, not in a lifetime.
Also, the GTS-R-SE-LT-SVT-VTTTT or whatever model they listed; not even real. googled this crap and came up with nothing.
Someones sorry attempt at a joke or sorry justification for putting thousands of dollars into their cheap piece of economy car because it has "4.2, 187" potential.

No no no. Lots and lots of driving and under 25mph with about 15% of the driving at 45mph will make it most efficient at 75mph. Don't forget to add in you short accelerations.
147 is crazy fast. A buddy and I once got his 67 Olds Cutlass convertable (305 motor) up to just under 140 one night and it scared the shit out of both of us. Of course that might have also been because we had the top down, too. Good thing the technology that exists now didn't then, who knows how many of our driving shenanigans we would've gotten away with if Big Brother were watching.
After some of the crazy stuff I did in cars, lord knows how my moron ass is still here. Of course I slowed down a lot when I hit my mid 20s or so. Now I only crank up my minivan to about 90 on the interstate if traffic is moving that fast. :--)

Kinda like Vo2 max for a car?
It would be interesting to check the accuracy of the camera system to clock them at 147. Thats pretty smokin to get a sonata up to, and you'd need a solid straight away with no traffic and a good 2 minutes to top it out.
Try going fast on a cycle, it will blow your heart right out of your chest. I hit 162 on my yamaha r6, and that scared the living shit out of me, I never put it past 130 after that.
You don't need anywhere near 500hp to go over 200mph. Motorcycles easily reach those speeds with under 175hp. The right car can do it with probably around 290hp if its light enough.
Weight, gearing, and aero dynamics are far more important than raw hp. Tires less so in a straight line, but vital if you want to change direction.
Also, cars are not limited to any speeds in the US. Most German makes voluntarily limit their cars to 155, but Ferrari doesn't, Ford doesn't, Chevy doesn't, and the list goes on. Japanese motorcycle manufacturers voluntarily limit their bikes to 182, but its easy to get around that.
That said, I doubt a Sonata rental went 147.

Tires are very important for straight line speed. What do you think the speed ratings on tires are for? You get increase load form aeor dynamics pushing down on the car, increased heat increasing pressure in the tire, etc. Tire design is very important for high speed driving, even if only in a straight line.
