Some that I know are in rly good shape, ride like 3 hours a day, yet still have a ton of bodyfat. Why is this?

Women in general have more body fat.
for one reason or another skinny women don't posses the power they need to be great cyclists. i used to race mountain bikes and i remember reading an article about this in a magazine. they took the top ten world cup mountain bike women and compared their weight to the mens top ten. the average man was something like 5 pounds (can't remember exact #) lighter than the average woman.
yea but compared to distance runners? Distance runner women are in general much skinnier than cyclist women even though they both do a ton of aerobic work.
Yea, the group I'm skinnier than all the girls in the group I ride with. Do women need the body fat though for the extra power? I thougt only muscle gives power?
Just a theory here, but maybe it's because the distance runner's you know have been doing it longer.
For example, the distance runners probably ran in high school, in college, and then post-collegiately. I bet the cyclists you're talking about never cycled competively in HS or college, and probably picked up cycling after spending most of the time excercising in some different manor.
I love you swimfan.
Cycling is much kinder to a wider range of body types than running is, mostly because there is a lot more aerodynamics , technique and strategy involved. Cycling in the USA is also dominated by crits, which could be thought of as a power/sprint event more than the pure endurance event of winning a major tour. So you don't need to be a waif to win races.
Sure being skinny gives you an advantage on long climbs, but you need the musculature to produce a lot of power on the flats and in the sprints as well.
