The Bicycle Song and Fat Bottom Girls
Hedge brother, I'm glad I know you are joking, because them's fightin' words.
Wham! has got to be right up there with Air Supply as the worst bands of all time. Honestly I wish I could put my finger on why they suck so bad. I guess it's something inherent that you just know. It's not because they are light rock either, because so is James Taylor, and while I don't want to listen to too many of his songs in a row, he doesn't suck.
In High School (this should date me) I used think of Sonic Youth's "Teenage Riot" during the 3200m, it got me into a relaxed, fast rhythm.
These days:
middle distance: hardcore stuff like Coalesce's
"One on the Ground," Burnt by the Sun's "You Will Move," maybe some Helmet "Unsung."
long stuff: droned-out meditative rock like Isis' "The Gentle Time," Neurosis' "A Sun That Never Sets."
I always liked "Jump (For My Love)" by the Pointer Sisters. It was released shortly before the L.A. Olympics in 1984, and its music video included a lot of track and field clips.
Worst running song: The theme song from "Chariots of Fire." Good only for 12-minute-mile pace or slower.
I run alone, yeah,
with nobody else
I run alone,
yeah,
with nobody else
You know when I run alone,
I prefer to run by myself
Every morning just before breakfast,
I don't want no coffee or tea
Just me and my good buddy roads,
that's all I ever need
'Cause I run alone,
yeah,
with nobody else
Yeah, you know when I run alone,
I prefer to run by myself
The other night I laid sleeping,
and I woke from a terrible dream
I dreampt my coach was Jack Daniels,
and his partner Jeff Galloway
And we ran alone,
yeah,
with nobody else
Yeah, you know when I run alone,
I prefer to run by myself
The other day I got invited to a race,
but I stayed home ran hills instead,
Just me and my pal Mr Fartlek,
and we ran hard until we were dead,
And we ran alone,
yeah,
with nobody else
Yeah, you know when I run alone,
I prefer to run by myself
I train hard and I win easy,
and it makes me feel oh so good
The only ones who keep up with me,
are some Kenyans if they could
And we run alone,
yeah,
with nobody else
Yeah, you know why I run alone?
'Cause prefer to win the race by myself
Long Distance Runner by the Grateful Dead
"Born slippy" by Underworld. Also "Bad-House-Music" by loving loop. And of course anything by DJ Crack.
"Winning it All" by the Outfield
I love "Born to be Wild" by Steppenwolf- you know:
Get your motor runnin'
Head out on the highway
Lookin' for adventure
And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space
I like smoke and lightning
Heavy metal thunder
Racin' with the wind
And the feelin' that I'm under
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space
Like a true nature's child
We were born, born to be wild
We can climb so high
I never wanna die
Born to be wild
I agree with that song. As a keyboard player (and guitar) I love that song. Easy to play and you sound like a pro even if you aren't.
For you music people (that's those who play, not just listen) Here's something I posted on another thread regarding this song:
Want to play some classic rock and utilize the blues scales, get a good rock organ sound and play Steppenwolf's Born to Be Wild. Follow along with the chord progression of the song like the organist does for that song and then rip off the blues in E scale for the fills. A pro is born.
Here it is:
[Em]Get your motor runnin'
Head out on the highway
Lookin' for adventure
In whatever comes our way
[G]Yeah, [A]darlin' gonna [E]make it happen
[G]Take the [A]world in a [E]love embrace

Good call on the Outfield song. Hopefully you'll appreciate these- "All fired up" (Pat Benatar)
"The Stairs" (INXS)
"Hold on Loosely," 38 Special
1) Springsteen's "Badlands"
As Pete Townsend said "This ain't a song about fun..its about f---ing triumph."
Lyrics include:
"I don't give a damn for the same old played out scenes.
I don't give a damn for just the in-betweens.
Honey I want the heart, I want the soul, I want it all
right now!!!
"Keep pushin' 'til its understood and these badlands start treatin' us good."
2) "Lunatic Fringe" - Red Ryder
I gotta go with the aforementioned "Run Like Hell" by Pink Floyd, with no other song a close second.
No one mentioned two other good running songs... "Running Down The Road" by Arlo Guthrie and "Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush.
I always thought the faster Squeeze songs, "Another Nail in My Heart" and "Vicky Verky," were perfect to run by. I had a friend who swore by "Take Me On" by A-ha,if you can believe that.
would you mean "fire on the mtn." by the dead?
lyrics - long distance runner, what you standing there for? get up get up, get out of the door.
personal picks - run like hell, most anything from the cult, and any marley.
Machinehead - Bush
I think that "Run" by Collective Soul should get an honary mention. It's a great tune, especially when doing a long run such as the 10k or marathon.
