Front-page link to story about Richard Kiplagat says Kiplagat's coach, Dieter Hogen, is Uta Pippig's husband. They were never married, and aren't a couple anymore. It's not surprising that the local rag doing the story botched the facts, but it would be nice if the RRCA's expert journalists would not just reprint everything they find online.
it would be nice if the reporter, paid for writing, did an accurate job.

I'm not making excuses for the author, but I think it is fair to assume that when something is linked to the front page that reliability is implied. When running a website, there is a responsiblity to the reader to link information that is accurate.
it is the editor's job to fact check, not someone linking to it. christ, how long would it take to fact check every article linked? and who cares about a meaningless detail like whether these people are married or not? that's not the point of the article.

the article is about Richard, not really his coach so how in depth would you like the site owners to go? Who gives a #%$^# if it says someone is married that isn't.Isn't there anything else more important for people to whine about today or is it really that slow of a day??

My sincerest apologies for not knowing the status of the relationships between Dieter Hogan and Uta Pippig and taking a reporters word for it. I am a terrible person. I am sorry.
A constructive email generally works better. That's what Matt Taylor did and we've aready made a correction to the homepage.
Dozens and sometimes hundreds of Irabs (and a few US soldiers) are killed or murdered in Iraq every day. Should each newspaper running the story be required to have a reporter personally count and verify the numbers? A similiar situation applies here. Responsibility for meeting journalistic standards of accuracy lie with the originator of the story.
The Brojos can be faulted for leaving wildly innacurate threads (almost always about drug usage) up when there clearly is no proof or legit accusations by responsible authorities. The thread on Jeremy Wariner comes to mind. Do I believe his reputation was sullied? Yes. Should the thread have been allowed to run for several days? no. Did it make for a sensational (story) thread? Yes. Should Letsrun.com try to emulate The National Inquirer? That can be decided by the posters.
