An hour a day is very good foundation work. HS X-C runners would find improved race times in the fall sesaon after a summer of this sort of solid, consistent training.

45 minutes per day, with 2 double days in which you do 30 minutes jog in the morning might work better for some runners. I prefer the higher intensity (tempo) of running 45' minutes compared with plodding for 60 minutes, which is often what happens.
Although doing 60 minutes per day does not seem much, many runners will benefit more by a more intense 45' minute run on most days, and two double days a week. The mileage total at the end of the week is about the same. The difference between 45' to 60' can be quite significant in terms of energy expenditure and fatigue. The overall quality will be higher with the 40-45 minute runs, and, even better, if you do the 2-3 morning runs, with 2 sessions in the afternoon (fartlek and hills) then even greater progress can be made.
I think 40-45 minutes duration is the ideal time to be running for most runners - not too long, but still long enough to give the body the type of duration needed to burn fats and other energy sources.
Ghost in Korea
Interesting post from ghost. I always find ghost's comments thought provoking and feel he talks a lot of sense. I particularly like the info on previous generations of runners as, being a fifty year old Brit, I know all the names he talks about.
I'm finding the same thing at the moment - that an hour run turns into a bit of a plod, whereas 45 mins and a few strides at the end is usually a much more up tempo session that leaves me feeling better and recovering quicker. This is probably more true for older runners like myself who have done the mileage over the years but are losing speed and need to keep the quality up rather than the quantity.
