I had a friendly disagreement with a very knowledgeable friend of mine regarding development of VO2 max and training schedules recently. His premise is that one should not do VO2 max intervals until the last phase of training. He went on to argue that it only takes 6 weeks of VO2 max work to reach your seasonal peak for VO2 max. Thus, the majority of the season should be dedicated to aerobic development, threshold and neuromuscular development via hills and short intervals with complete recoveries.
This seems contrary to what Daniels and Vigil and other respected coaches/physiologist recommend. After thinking about my own performances and training, I did notice that after about 6 weeks of 1000's @ 3k-5k race pace my race times seem to level off. If we are racing 5k's every weekend from early Sept to early December, perhaps VO2 max work early in the year is not that necessary since the race itself is a VO2 max workout?? Obviously, I'm coming around to his thinking on this. Am I being led astray?
Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated.
