I vote for David Bowie.
I vote for David Bowie.
Beatles.
Madonna, if you can call her a musician at all.
David Lee Roth.
Gotta be JIM MORRISON... the guy was a rambling drunk with no voice...
Dave Matthews. Why is this guy so popular? His songs are stupid and boring.
Tom Petty is mediocrity personified, and if you consider eminem anything other than a cretin, he is overrated at whatever you consider him.

No, Doors were great, Morrison didn't have a great voice but their music was a bit more than a singing contest.
Pre.
I'll second Jim Morrison.
I would agree with Dave Matthews but I don't think he is rated by anybody; or last least anybody who matters (people not in frats, that is).
Whoever said David Bowie is sadly misinformed. Go listen to Ziggy Stardust. Go listen to the stuff he did in Berlin. Go listened to the albums he produced for Lou Reed and Iggy Pop. His influence on music for the past 40 years is as important as virtually everybody else.
CCR.
My vote goes to the 'god' of mediocrity Eric Clapton.
Bowie - Innovative and adaptive.
Beatles - Remember that they were basically first. No 'rock' influences. They are the influence
Madonna - Not a musician, but a 'pop' genius.
D.L. Roth - Can't be overrated if you don't even rate. Decent front man.
Jim Morrison - Better than the Doors as a whole, but lyrics were a mish-mash. Seemingly self-important. Great cover by Val Kilmer
Dave Matthews - Don't know enough about him. Hmmm that may be the answer. Why not?
Tom Petty - Not bad/Not great. Adaptable to the outer edges of a small circle of sounds.
I have listened to Ziggy Stardust. The only thing that crappy songs like "Suffragette City" are good for are annoying the piss out of me when they get in my head on long runs.

Oooooh, good call. Can't believe I overlooked him. Definitely THE most overrated musician, especially on the college music scene.
I agree with most of the above and will add:
Eddie Vedder: his self-important yordelings are enough to make me dive across the room to kill the radio.
Mick Jagger: self-evident
Jerry Garcia (I'd include all of the Dead, but the thread header wasn't "musicians"....come to think of it, neither were they!)
Queen is probably the most overrated group ever. I hate them.
Kurt Cocaine
Santana
W.A. Mozart
Wrote the same piece a zillion times. With any background in theory/composition, it's almost childishly simple to write something that sounds like Mozart. For contrast, try writing like Prokofiev or Liszt. Composition became much more difficult in the Romantic and Contemporary eras.
Bob Dylan, nuff said.
