I agree. But, I think all the high profile work she has done to try to create a healthier environment for girls and women in sports is what tipped the balance in her favor.
It is sad that so many people on this message board are tearing her down and posting inaccurate information.
BTW, I am a physician and a Stanford alum.

So many women runners avoid this forum like the plague - Katelyn Tuohy, Parker Valby, Mary Cain, and many others. After reading through this thread it’s not difficult to see why.
While you aren't wrong about the forums being stupid at times, there are good points about women (not necessarily Cain either) getting benefits and privilege men can't get.
Are you showing a bit of fragility there, Sparky? A bit of Woe, is me? Should we all play little violins for you?
Women have no advantage when applying to medical school. You can say that they do, but they don't. If you're not referring to medical school, do you honestly believe that women have privilege over men?
You are vare saying her father being a doctor made her more likely to also be a doctor?
yup.
Students who have a parent who is a medical practitioner are eight times more likely to go on to study medicine or dentistry at university than their classmates.
But a lot of posts are making the wrong assumption. People are kind of assuming it's some sort of insidet thing, connections, etc.
I don't really agree. One thing I can't believe people don't talk about more is genetics. In horse racing, the concept of inheriting things from genes - like speed - is obvious.
With humans, the concept of inheriting IQ should also be obvious but we want to act like everyone is a blank slate which isn't true. The reality is IQ is highly inheritable for adults - way over 50% and some think close to 80%. If her parents are smart, she's likely smart.
Research on the heritability of IQ inquires into the degree of variation in IQ within a population that is due to genetic variation between individuals in that population. There has been significant controversy in the academi...
Also the idea that she won't work hard is crazy to me. Yes she's moved around a lot in terms of running, atalanta, tracksmith, triathlon, etc but I've got little doubt if she finds something that she's good at, that has a big reward behind it, she'll work very hard at it.

What's "crazy" about observing that Mary Cain has a pattern of lack of work ethic? Mary Cain is a just another social media influencer these days who just jumps from thing to thing to get likes and followers. I'll bet you that Mary Cain doesn't stick with the medicine thing for more than a year before making it quietly disappear, like her triathlon career, for the next thing to get more likes. Loser has to go visit a doctor at a hospital without health insurance.

That makes sense too--some kids are more pre-disposed to STEM-focused learning than others, whether it is in medicine or software, etc.

like all things human, it's a big, complicated mix of genetics, culture, family traditions, social expectations, nature, nurture, admissions biases like legacy admits....
the danger is trying to narrow any of this down to one thing.
Personally, I resent colleges giving too much credit for being famous. What Cain has done brings glamour to the university but I can't see how it translates to her being a better doctor.

parents weren't real smart sending her off to the creep at 17. One hour of research and they would see that's a recipe for disaster.
Anyway, hopefully she finds happiness @ Med School
Not going to comb through everything in this thread, but I don't know where all this stuff about her being a "legacy" is coming from. I'm confident that neither of her parents have any connection to Stanford: 100% confirmed on her father and 99% confirmed on her mother (I checked the alumni database out of curiosity). As others have said, I doubt legacy status matters for the med school, but it's almost certainly false in any case. Do people really think that having parents as doctors makes her a "legacy??" Is that what they're talking about? Guess they don't know what "legacy" means.

I wish I could say it's amazing that the Brojos don't see the board for what it is -- a haven for the most pathetic misogynist assclowns you can imagine. But it's not amazing, since they encourage and participate in it.

Why would the incel losers who post on this board bother with facts when they can just blindly hate on her for no reason instead?
It takes time and effort to learn and retain facts; being a basement dwelling angry chump costs and takes nothing.

Fact: Mary Cain's professional triathlon career lasted only 1 sprint race and she has never done any more in the years since because she wasn't the best and didn't put any effort into learning how to bike. Same for her attempted comeback at running when she only did 1 track meet and then quit again because she didn't even put effort into training like others.
