What do coaches look for when you are entering transfer portal compared to when you are being recruited out of high school
1. How good you were compared to when you were coming out of high school.
2. What university you went to originally and why.
3. Usually take everything the former coach says with a grain of salt since you are leaving but look out for the major red flags
4. Has your body comp drastically changed (might be taboo to day but no one wants to bring someone with an ED onto their team)
Impact is valued more than potential.
For me. I feel for the most part a transfer now has their 'impress my friends' or 'sounds good to others' goggles off. That of course is a generalization.
HS seniors have no idea what to expect from college so they evaluate things differently.
So because of the portal I lean more towards recruiting a transfer than a HS senior.
That's just how i look at it. others may have a different take.
Deion Sanders said he won’t recruit HS anymore.
D1 coach here.
We look at times, grades, and get to know the athlete first. Just like high school.
I look for athletes that are looking at graduate schools. The older athletes from bigger schools have already had "the experience" of a power 5 and are looking for something that is a better fit.
The transfer portal is great because usually it's only a 1-2 year commitment and you can pay more knowing the money will come back quickly. A 4 year commitment that may not improve at the rate you thought they would and you're on the hook for 4-5 years.
