In the lead-up to Tokyo, there was a lot of discussion (at least here North of the border) of the improvement in the depth of Canadian distance running, especially on the women's side. In Tokyo we qualified:
800 - 3 women, 2 men
1500 - 3 women, 0 men
5,000 - 3 women, 3 men
Steeple - 3 women, 2 men
10,000 - 1 woman, 1 man
Granted it's early in the 2024 season, but given performances from the last half of 2023 and indoors count, it's shocking how far off Canada seems to have fallen. On the women's there are zero women with standard in any of the above events. Zero! And that's even including the famously fast indoor Boston meets. We will likely get a handful in on rankings across the events, but that suggests they are unlikely to be competitive/make any finals.
We are doing slightly better on the men's side - with Marco in the 800 (medal favourite) and Moh in the 5,000 and 10,000 (also a medal chance). But otherwise we only have CPT and Ben Flanagan, both of whom will be hard pressed to advance past the heats.
We will hopefully see GDS return to form, but hard to see who else will come out of the woodwork and hit a fast time to book a ticket to Paris.
