A similar post on here just got me thinking. What would be the minimum marathon time you would have to run and also be able to knock out a sub 3min 1km. E.g Should a 2:48 marathon runner who averages 4min/km for 42 1km back to back also be able to run a 1km in under 3 minutes fresh or would it require someone quite a bit faster?
You don't have to be able to run a marathon in order to run a sub 3 minute 1000m. So yes, sure a 2:48 marathoner 'could do it.' A dnf and dns marathoner could do it. I think the question you meant to ask is, "what is the slowest marathon time that still guarantees someone could definitely run sub 3 min in the 1k?"
There are probably a lot of people who could easily break 3 min for a 1k, but couldn't come anywhere close to finishing a marathon. They are almost different sports.

I actually think it’s the other way round.
The 3 hour marathon is obviously more gruelling, more ominous and, in that sense, more of an achievement.
