Two of my favorite tidbits are:
Bobby Grich and Derek Jeter have essentially the same WAR. [Grich lasted only one year on the HOF ballot (2.6 % of the vote) while people were upset that a single sportswriter did not vote for Jeter.]
Curt Schilling has the highest WAR of any player not in the Hall of Fame that was not involved in PEDs or gambling.

Pretty interesting. They both do have about the same lifetime WAR. Ask a New Yorker who Derek Jeter and most would know. Very, very few would know who Bobby Grish is.
Which MLB players have the most career WAR? 1 of 32. Babe Ruth (182.6 WAR) ... 2 of 32. Walter Johnson (165.1 WAR) ... 3 of 32. Cy Young (163.6 WAR) ... 4 of 32. Barry Bonds (162.8 WAR) ... 5 of 32. Willie Mays (156.1 WAR) ... 6 of 32. Ty Cobb (151.5 WAR) ... 7 of 32. Hank Aaron (143.0 WAR) ... 8 of 32. Roger Clemens (139.2 WAR

Jeter has a great PR staff. If you listen to the media treatment of him, you'd think he was the baseball equivalent of Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, and Tom Brady all rolled into one. He was a good player on great teams; hardly an immortal.
WIlliams won't be high on the all-time WAR list because he lost 5.5 prime seasons. Best hitter ever, IMO.

Jeter was a great leader, very few have that quality especially in an unforgiving city.

That right there shows you how f*cking meaningless WAR is at determining the greatness of a player. Bobby Grich was a SOLID player. He's not in the Hall of Fame. He only had 1833 hits. His career batting average is .266. Derek Jeter on the other hand had a .310 career batting average and the SIXTH MOST HITS IN MLB HISTORY at 3465. Bobby Grich is a guy who played in the major leagues. Derek Jeter is one of the best players in the history of the game (sorry if you don't agree, but the 6th most hits in the history of the game says otherwise).

Derek Jeter had a weak WAR. HIS defense WAR was horrible. He was a terrible fielding person. If not for playing in NYC no one would care about him. Most overrated player of all time.
We’ve had this debate before. Considering how long Major League Baseball has been played, anyone with a top 100 all-time career WAR did something right.

INCORRECT! He didn't get 3465 hits and end up with a career batting average of .310 because he played in New York.
And, while I disagree that he's the most overrated player of all time (I'd say most underrated of all time, because most do not realize how high up on the hits list he is), I'll say that in this discussion about WAR, it matters not.
Are you saying that Bobby Grich was the same caliber of player that Derek Jeter was? WAR says so. Foolish. Nonsense.

Jeter also had no pop and was a below average fielder. His lifetime slugging average was only .440. Rose has the most hits but I don think that makes him the best player ever.

People like to rip on Jeter's fielding. He wasn't below average. He just wasnt stellar. Also, he was a shortstop. He wasn't supposed to be hitting a ton of homeruns. As it is, he has the 5th most HRs by a shortstop ever. That's pretty damn solid, especially since two of them ahead of him (A-Rod and Tejada) were both PED cheaters.
Pete Rose was a great player, but I agree that the most hits doesn't make him the best player ever, but it DOES make him one of the best...just like Jeter is one of the best ever. Also, Jeter player fewer seasons than all 5 of the players with more hits than him, so he wasn't just hanging around to accumulate like Rose was (but to Rose's credit, he DID have 10 seasons with 200 or more hits...that is outstanding).
Back to the WAR discussion though...is Bobby Grich in the same realm as Derek Jeter? WAR says so. Nonsense. Nonsense stat.

While not a great fielder, he made some great plays when it counted- he was a clutch performer.
