Whoa, that is impressive. Nuguse only ran 3:34 something in college. There also is a lesson there in that he struggled last year so it's taken him some time adjust to college and the training. But the talent is undeniable.
.2s away from the NCAA record as a sophomore, absolutely smashing Nathan Green, Craig Engels, and a bunch of other guys who all ran well. And it's April.
What was his last lap? What does this performance indicate for NCAAs and the trials? He's right off the Olympic standard too, I think. Seems like he's improving super fast.
Nico was beating him my large margins in the mile indoors, and he's been on a tear outdoors. After his 1:48.00 today (where someone in front of him fell?), do we still think he's faster than Colin in the mile? That 3:48 altitude conversion doesn't seem far off at all to me now.
How long until every top recruit in the nation starts going to NAU? Birnbaum raced in like September and just got a season ending injury. Burns is injured I'm pretty sure. The Young twins are pretty far off their HS pbs (although they get Stanford diplomas). UW is probably preferable for milers, but Mike Smith seems to be pretty successful with them too. I know Aaron Sahlman said he was going to NAU because he's all in on running, and despite a nasty injury last year, he ran a 400 pb right after XC.
Won't happen. First of all, NAU doesn't have enough scholarships for every top runner. Second, there are plenty of other good running schools with much better academics than NAU.
I think it'd only make sense if you were willing to go all in on running like Nico, Nur, and Colin have. If I was Birnbaum, and my mindset was "Olympics or bust", I'd be choosing Mike Smith and 7k ft of altitude over Schumacher in Eugene. An NAU degree isn't worth any less than an Oregon degree. If you don't get a scholarship, and can't make it work with NIL money, you'd just have to bet on yourself being good enough to make it. That's a potentially very expensive bet, but it paid off for Nur.
centro stepped off the track a little after 1200 in last. craig runs fastest time since 2021 in the pouring rain, but loses to 2 collegians. i wonder where gary martin finishes in the first heat
Letsrun led me to believe that based on his freshman year, Colin was a washed up, has been, do nothing HS star who wouldn't achieve anything.
Its almost as if an insanely talented, hard working kid finally got into a groove with one of the best coaches in America.
Its probably just a fluke though, because the Brosnan runners do nothing in college and if you don't set world records as a freshman, you're washed anyways.
