Recently I’ve added faster stuff to my training, specifically sets of 200s going from 2 mile pace down to 800 pace with 200 jog in between, and 400s at mile pace as a separate session. I’ve done 400s like that but never 200 workouts. I switch off each week to week.
I did this because I suck at fast stuff and thought I needed to get more efficient/work on it (I have literally no kick whatsoever). I am a very slow twitch, strength runner, who’s best at cross country. The longer the distance, the better I am.
And since adding this in, I’ve been noticing I’m…slower?? It’s only been 3 weeks or a month, but my easy run pace is way slower, my threshold workouts are way slower, just everything is way slower.
Even as a high schooler doing the 2 mile, at I better off training as a very strength oriented runner, with a bunch of threshold and tempo work and mileage? I would think since I suck at speed I need to work on it but that’s actually made me slower…including in those exact 200s I’ve been practicing.
And no I can’t ask my coach because I’m the only distance runner on my team.
