Anyone that’s read this site shouldn’t be surprised. Runners appear to be selfish unsupportive jerks. Anyone struggling would be eaten alive by their teammates.
I'd guess the male xc runners that are suicidal have a perfectionist disposition, probably relevant to their childhood environment, which contributes to the issues. Running is also a sport where you know definitively where you're at performance wise. In baseball you could go 0-4 and chalk it up as bad luck, but you can't really say you're in PR shape if you do a race and are 30 secs off your PR unless you're dogging it. It's individual focused and the results are accurate reflection of current ability.
Just my opinion but not only do I think mental health problems and social media or correlated, I outright think social media CAUSES mental health problems. FB for example, has become a cesspool. I can't imagine TikTok or other crap sites' effects on our younger generation.
Depression can be a medical issue. Best friend growing up. His mom was hospitalized for depression any times. As an adult so was he until he took his own life. Had 2 kids own business but was always depressed.

I’m sorry this has been your experience. I can honestly say that my D1 teammates were and remain some of my closest, most supportive friends. Truly brothers. I am 45 and still feel this way about them.
This is not a shock considering the suicide rate has been increasing for a while. College aged people have been reporting more anxiety for years now. Also suicide has become more common in groups that once were not showing high rates: intact families, families with "means", kids who make good grades, who seem to have a network.
I am not a monocausalist, but I really think that social media has to play some role in this increase. It might caustic comments or feeling like you are missing out because of what people see on social media.
I have 2 kids in college right now and the experience is so different from what they tell me (in some ways better I will admit). It is interesting that they tell me about people they know who are not very engaged with others.
It is hard living under the sexist, racist, anti-heterosexual, anti-sanity, anti-biology, anti-citizen, anti-human, pro-criminal regime that teaches everyone to hate themselves. The status quo that oppresses and discriminates against you in education/employment/law and then demands you buy into the idea that you are the evil oppressor and can't die off fast enough.
Most runners are from upper middle class white families with no REAL problems. They think that because they can't run 5 kilometers under 15 minutes that they are depressed. Someone needs to explain to these kids that they won the life lottery (rich white boys born in North America sent to private universities).
wealth doesn't = no problems (emotionally, psychologically, or whatever).
I have a distant relative from an very wealthy family. I can tell you, her bio family is extremely messed up. 2 out of the 3 kids did not "develop fully" (or however you want to say it). As in, 2 out of 3 don't have careers. despite having almost unlimited means to pursue their life goals.
You might be proving his point. Are those 2 kids without careers living on the street or in a shoddy, cheap apartment with no TV, cell phone, or car? Or are they supported in a comfy lifestyle by mom & dad?
Look at this board for how you guys treat each other. The brojos facilitate and nurture sexism and racism for clicks. This attitude is bound to influence some people.
