On March 4, 2024, 18-year-old Jase Klinkhammer of Bellingham was arrested on charges of rape in the 2nd degree, a class A felony, and making a false or misleading statement to a public servant, later upgraded to perjury in the second degree, a class C felony.
Meridian HS has chosen to allow him to continue to compete on their track team, he is one of the top athletes in the state in their division.
When I was in high school, we had athletes occasionally suspended from the team for weed or fighting in other sports. This is crazy - seems like they'd only kick him off for murder. Even if he's found innocent, my school would have suspended anyone charged with a felony until a decision was made
The courts have consistently ruled that competing in high school sports is a privilege, not a right. At most schools kids routinely face disciplinary actions like missing games are even being kicked off the team for things like getting caught with alcohol at a party or smoking marijuana.
Yes, he is innocent in the eyes of the law until proven guilty but that’s not the legal standards that schools apply when it comes to discipline.
Now this is what I can a journalist doing their research! Excellent job! Keeping to the facts, remaining neutral, getting statements from the district, researching district policies ... outstanding!
I know I ain’t no legal expert, but what’s the point of letting the defendants choose whether they wish to plea guilty or not, if they can just be proven innocent or guilty?
Would he be allowed to compete if the charges were first degree murder?
There's a pretty good chance if he was charged with murder-1, he'd be held in jail until trial. While I understand that there's a difference between a legal standard and a school's decision on if/when/how to discipline a kid, there is no make-up season for him if they suspend him or kick him off the team, and then the charges get dropped, he is found not guilty, and/or it turns out the victim is lying. Are you so sure he did what he's accused of that you're confident there's no risk of him having to miss a season for something he didn't do? If you're so confident, how are you so confident?
Besides, in this day and age, I'm sure there will be some group protesting him at every meet he's in, and probably twitter users will post about it constantly and Salon will probably have Amanda Marcotte write a "commentary" piece telling us how this is a case study in structural sexism. Even if he's innocent he'll get hounded whether he competes or not. If he's found guilty, then punishment can commence. I understand it sounds like I'm taking the side of a person many of you have already decided is a monster, but I don't care for the idea of punishing someone for something that has not been proved yet.

If he pleads guilty, there is no trial.

If a judge thought he were dangerous, he wouldn't have granted b
We don't know how strong is the case. At bail hearing, defense attorney argues a bit in favor of detainee. There may barely be a case strong enough for arrest.
Errors stated in this thread:
> Detainees and defendants are innocent until proven guilty but no one is proven innocent in court.
> A poster brought up a teammate who was arrested for weed. Did your teammate plead guilty?

Surprised this student is still allowed to compete

Although bail is usually set very high, what if he bailed out? Typical bail would be around $1M on a Murder 1 so 10% of that would be $100K. Would they then let him stay on the HS team?

And that is precisely the problem.
Since he IS innocent, it is mysterious why the lady who lied is still in school. School and police should be doing all they can to figure out the "why" for why she lied, and once they find out why, do all they can to hold her and her parents responsible for what they put the innocent young man through.
Would he be allowed to compete if the charges were first degree murder?
Case seems fake - he wouldn't get bail if there were actual proof or a preponderance of evidence. If someone is actually charged with 1st degree murder, they would never get bail except if they're intersectional and in a city with a Soros DA.

What in God's name are you talking about? As a troll post, this is at the level of junior high; if it is real, you need help and fast. Read the fu**ing police report, dumb*ass.
