Just as Caitlin Clark couldn't win for Iowa - South Carolina was the better team - Edey couldn't win for Purdue as UConn was the better team, certainly on the day. People expect too much from Edey - he is a terrific BBall player at the College level, whether he can succeed at the NBA, only time will tell and if he can find a niche role to showcase his abilities. Some College stars make the transition and some do not - glad he did the full 4 years at Purdue (as people did back in the day), it shouldn't just be a short apprenticeship for the NBA.
I thought he played his tole exceptionally well early on, but then 2 things happened: 1) UConn adapted, and 2) he got tired.
(2) is really the big one. He was unable to hit, and unable to adapt, when fatigued.
What you do for that, idk. EPO? He has to have had lots of conditioning over the past 4 years, right?
ALL Purdue’s offensive plays centered on getting him the ball down low. He did more than enough. Look at the assist table, only 1 player had any, a total of only 8. Zero offensive play balance. UConn had more than 2x that number as a team, and they were spread around.
If this was the 90s Edey would be #1 pick overall, but the game has changed. The NBA wants 7footers who can stretch the floor more. 7footers who CAN hit 3s if need to.
Completely accurate. I had heard Edey might fall out of first round, as a second rounder worth a look? The issue is, the way the game is played today, it is not played from post out...I mean, who would he guard? a 6"10-7'0 Holmgren or Porzingas? Greek Freak? Embid? Jokic? those are just 5, everyone almost, has one. There isn't a fit for him for big minutes, it's up and down, motion, back cuts, ball screens, 3's.
Seriously he’s just really tall, that’s it. He gets tired easily, can’t shoot threes and is questionable midrange. He won’t last in the NBA and never won a title in college.
Your comment is so small and unintelligent. Edey is a two time National Player of the year for a reason. His stats put him in the top tier in the history of college basketball. His team other than him pretty much sucks. He has to do everything, and he pretty much does everything. All the focus is on him in every way and he has consistently delivered.
Whether he will be good in the NBA or not has nothing to do with him being the real deal in college. If you are posting this for reactions, then good for you. If you are serious, it's pretty sad.
For the record, the rest of his team, who you claim sucks have been top 10 defense and offense the whole season, and have been first or second in 3 pt shooting percentage the whole season. Edey outplayed Clingan last night, and it wasn't even close. Uconn just played phenomenal perimeter defense and rebounded better.
today he was ineffective due to the refs letting uconns guys jump him every play
I think 37 points on 60 percent shooting is pretty effective. The problem is Purdue’s other players were ineffective. After making 10 threes in their semifinal, they made only 1 last night. UConn’s defensive strategy was to essentially let Edey get his points by having Clingan guard him one on one, while not leaving Purdue’s shooters open. It worked.

By people who know, meaning NBA scouts, etc, he’s not overrated at all. ZE is barely a first round prospect. So, no, he is not overrated

By definition he is not overrated. He is one of the best big men is history. He dominated very team he played. Since nobody at all has predicted a stellar NBA career, not sure where he was overrated?

I didn't watch last nights game yet. Taped it. But if Edey tired out, playing the full 40 minutes in the semi might have something to do with that. Plus I'd have to imagine he was getting pounded, as usual.

I've watched a ton of B1G games this season, and it's laughable to say he gets tired easily. Dude is in fantastic shape and outlasted everyone who matched up against him in the tournament. Everyone on both teams looked a little tired at times, but I don't think fatigue was a major factor for Edey last night.

You don't know ball.
Edey is 7'4 with good length (wingspan) and solid defensive instincts. He's a dominant presence in the paint on both ends of the floor and has answered every question you could reasonably ask of him throughout this tournament run. If he was going to be exposed it would've been against Gonzaga or UConn, but he held up well in both matchups, protecting the rim in space against Gonzaga and imposing his will against Clingan and the Huskies without much fanfare.
Offensively, the whole "doesn't shoot threes or midrange" thing is pointless. He's a center, in the NBA his job will be to rebound, box out, protect the rim, set screens, and roll to the rim- if he masters these things, he won't have to expand his game much at all.
He seems to have fine endurance given that he played all but 33 seconds of his final two tournament games while shouldering a heavy load for Purdue. He'll have to adjust to the faster pace of NBA games, but that can be said for any college prospect.
Success in the NBA is no longer dependent on having 5 guys under 6'9 running around jacking up threes playing micro-ball (looking at you, Golden State). There are too many teams with overwhelming positional size for that to work anymore. See the Bucks, Nuggets, Timberwolves, Celtics, and Lakers, as well as up and coming teams like the Cavs and Magic.
Zach Edey will likely go in the first round and begin his career as a backup center. If he develops as a player, he could be a respectable starting center in the NBA, probably most resembling Ivica Zubac. He is too talented, has accomplished too much individually and as a team, and has too many valuable/tantalizing physical traits/skills for him to fall out of the first round. I could even see him being a lottery pick as this is one of the weaker drafts of the last decade.
With all due respect we're not talking about Drew Timme here. Let's be serious.

He doesn't get tired easily, he did 2 years ago but not anymore. Everyone who plays against UConn gets exhausted. They make you play defense for the whole 30 seconds with their ball movement. Their defense is also tough on opponents. Clingan plays about 22 minutes a game with Johnson the rest for UConn whole Edey pretty much plays the whole game. Edey did great. His smaller guards were no match for UConn's lottery projected guards.
You never know what will happen with a player when they hit the NBA. Christian Laettner was one of the best perimeter shooters in NCAA history and one of the best go to clutch shooters in NCAA history. But he was never a factor in the NBA. And Zion Williamson has gone from future LeBron James to dud and now back to a star. So, it is pretty much impossible to predict what will happen with top NCAA players.
But Edey played 39 minutes, more than any one else on Purdue's team. He was more than half of Purdue's offensive production with 37 points and also had 10 rebounds, despite playing against the one player in all of college basketball who can effectively guard him. The problem was that U Conn's ball movement was just too good and too much for Purdue to handle. Hurley is the best coach in the NCAA right now and his team is better at creating open shots with great ball movement than any other team in the NCAA. U Conn won all their tournament games by double digits because no one could keep up with how well U Conn was able to pass and create open looks on offense.
I thought UConn was the better team, and that they pretty much controlled the game from the second half on.
UConn executed its game-plan, which allowed Edey to dominate the stats. He did his part, although he did seem to tire (understandably) in the second half.
I was disappointed that Edey didn't punch the meth-addled Danny Hurley when he ran out on-court for the umpteenth time to mouth off to the officials.
Seriously, why wasn't Hurley T-'d up for walking onto the court DURING PLAY, to push his own player? On top of all the histrionics with the officials throughout the game. Hurley should have been in the lockerroom for the last 10-12 minutes of the game.
