I'd actually agree with this even as an older runner.
It's something that's hard to convince my peers who're maybe running 50mpw. They hurt and even I do when I'm running that low mileage. But when you start to hit 80 and more everything feels 'good'. Body clicks, mind clicks. I am myself.
Just extremely hard getting out of a rut to bring myself back from 50 - 80 when coming back from injury and a busy adult life.
I think about this all the time. I felt good in my prime, so I am building my high school athletes to 75-100 mpw. They don’t like it and most get hurt but it’s the only way to perform at the level they train and compete at
Wow this is a disgusting hopeless place. OP needs to ask himself "who would i be if i wasn't a runner" and this MF doesn't have enough understanding of basic biology and physiology to be coaching high school athletes
With very minimal talent (mile PR 4:45) on 110 mpw in college ran Boston in 2:26, then 5 years later (working full time+) on 55 mpw ran Boston 2:26 and more sub 2:30's at Boston & NYC. Lesson learned: run once per day, 6 days/week. Less injuries and plenty of time to live a full Life. Stay Happy & Healthy.

way too many people in the competitive running community takes running way too seriously. unless if you are making money off of running (pro runner or a runner with a social media following), you should not even attempt to reach your potential because the last few drops of performance that you can squeeze out of yourself will come at a cost of your what little time you have in your life while you also work a full time job. 50mpw is more than enough to run at 95% of your potential. if you REALLY love running, then 65 should be your max.
Other hobbies and interests or a new inspiring person to add dimension to your day/week/life? You are rhetorically presenting it as though it is an unhealthy addiction. It takes a lot of mileage to get you to a place where you should feel most of the time. Maybe it's sublimating for something else you're not facing. Maybe you just like running a lot.
Anything less than 100mpw and I feel dead inside. At 50mpw, I’m depressed and near catatonic. Less than 50mpw, and I need to be committed.
At 100mpw, the universe reveals itself and I become real. Anyone else?
Get a life
You should feel empty inside if you're not cranking out 100+ mile weeks. Otherwise you're wasting your time and should look to play pickleball or fortnite. If you can't find 1 hour 45 minutes to run everyday just quit.
I finished my 2nd run of the day two hours ago. 16 for today. Going to do some core work now before bed. Always feels good to have the muscles engaged before bed. Gives a little extra pleasure.
