Thoughts on the book and the movie Holes?
My favorite scene from the movie
The movie was fine. I absolutely love the book.
Shia is a bit of a tool but he's a great actor, though not necessarily in this movie.
The book is fantastic IMO- it's one of those kid's books that deals with pretty complex topics without overly simplifying the subject matter or talking down to it's audience, while still being entertaining/approachable and fairly age-appropriate in terms of content. Absolutely holds up as an adult read too, and it's the kind of thing you can come back to later in life, appreciate from a different angle, and find a bunch of meaning you might have missed when you were a kid.
The movie is... serviceable. It's definitely more surface-level and linear (both in terms of story structure and overall meaning), but I think that's probably a consequence of the format/market and it does what it sets out to do reasonably competently. It's missing a lot of the nuance that made the book so good, but it's a decent couple of hours of entertainment, and you could probably do a lot worse in that genre of movies.
