hi! i'm a runner currently in my sophomore year of high school. i've been running cross-country and track competitively since 7th grade, but i've been through a lot of setbacks that have hindered my progress. last xc season, i didn't break any of my freshman prs, and i think it may have been due to overtraining. after xc, i took two weeks off and switched to base training. my winter base phase was good, but i never got to the amount of weekly mileage that i hoped to get to (i wanted at least 40, because i had a 40+ weekly mileage during the winter of freshman year when i was in the best shape ever, but i only got to 35-ish this last winter). when the official training season at my school started in february (i live in california), that mileage started decreasing because my coaches' workouts are very short, fast, anaerobic, and intense (a lot of 400m repeats and stuff). my coaches seem to think that i don't need a very high mileage, but i've done the best when i have a high mileage. i'm definitely more of a distance runner and i'm focusing on the 3200 this season. i do the same workouts as the 800/1600 runners, which i think is part of the problem. the thing is, my coaches start ramping up the intense workouts right when the season starts, and then expect me to keep doing those workouts for the next 13+ weeks. i've heard that you can only maintain this kind of peak for 4-6 weeks, which may be part of the problem too. i've already had at least 6 weeks of this intensity, although i've tried to counteract it with super slow recovery runs (like, so slow that i'm practically walking). i cut the base runs so i could recover from the intense workouts/races. i think i'm starting to lose fitness, but my most important race is still 6 weeks away, and i was hoping to keep improving before then (i still have a long way to go if i want to hit my 3200 time goal). my team also does a lot of meets (at least 1 a week, oftentimes 2, although i'm trying to limit it to 1 so i can prevent overtraining). i think the amount of meets has been hindering my progress too, especially since the meets start really early on in the season. i don't think i had enough time to build my base. i probably jumped into the peak phase too soon, and now i'm not sure what to do. should i try to go back to base training for a few weeks, and then switch to race-specific workouts?
