Hi, I'm a young senior right now who won't be 17 until December. I weigh 170 pounds, 6'1, and I cross train for running at the gym. I have done a lot of swimming as well, receiving several emails from coaches asking me to swim in college. I only mention that to point out that I have not been focused on running but am starting to focus on it now since I decided to go to Texas A&M where I will not be able to swim on their team. I figured the running standards would be far too fast for me to achieve, and I was a little surprised when I saw on runcruit.com that their 800 walk on time is only a 1:58. This season so far I dropped from a 2:16 to 2:12 even though I'm running like 15 or so miles per week right now, probably less (I'll start building the mileage a few weeks after this track season ends). My best time currently is only a 2:12, 400 is a 56.8, 1600 is a 5:08, and 5k is an 18:20 but that was a long time ago. I figure I can hit at least a 2:09 this season in the 800.
Assuming I run a 2:09 800 this season, does it seem crazy or unreasonable to get down to a sub 2:00 800 time by next January or February? I plan on running 45-50 miles a week (I have built up to that point in the past albeit briefly but I know I can do it), and cross training at the gym, and when I'm racing dropping that to around 30-40 miles a week. I'll work as hard as I need to, focus on getting rest, and training however I need to to achieve this goal. The idea is to get fast enough to possibly redshirt on A&M's team either my freshman or at least sophomore year of college.
Thoughts? Any suggestions on training, mileage, or general advice?
