I do what some of the elites did in the 80s: get hammered the night before. Many would agree, some of my best races were after a night of partying into the early hours of the morning. What the science is behind it or if there is science to it Idk. Maybe extra carbs?? but I never had the same experience by not getting drunk the night before but instead drinking a lot of juice and eating heavy on the carbs. But drinking the night before works for me. I ain't no 20 year old college kid either. I am 31.
During the last week of a standard 4 month block of training before a big race, it has looked like this for the last 5 years:
Monday: AM 6 miles PM 2 miles with strides
Tuesday: AM 8 miles PM off
Wednesday: AM 5 miles PM 1 mile with strides (less strides than on Monday)
Thursday: AM off PM off
Friday: AM 2 miles PM off
Saturday: Race Day
Friday PM is when I get hammered. I don't really go out anymore bar hopping, going club to club, walking the streets between venues and all that. Its more of kind of hanging out with friends at one of our homes and drink and get sloshed while playing games, watching movies, stuff that doesn't require a lot of physical activity. In my youth, it used to be bar hopping and clubbing until 3 AM, wake up at 6 A.M. still halfway drunk, and be racing by 8 AM. I think it may have to do with the pain-reducing and calming effects of alcohol why I race so wel the next day.
