coach this week had us do 4 4x1600s with 1 minute rest - i was hitting 5:40 pretty comfortably, with about 8 weeks of 20 miles/week and no speed training. Would this indicate that I have ability to go sub 4:30 1600 this season?

that interval time equates to about a 4:32 mile right now as rule of thumb is 20% differential btw that type of repeat work w/ 1 minute rest and race time - so by end of season should be sub 4:30 - good luck!
That's silly. There is no set equivalency on that. I had a boy go 4 * 1600 @ 5:02 on 60 seconds. He's not a 4:00 boy.
what was his rest btw
and what’s his 1600 time - or is it a big secret 🤐
60 seconds in between.
He ran 4:16 last year. I think he's maybe in 4:10 shape right now.
the one exception where ur kid may fall into is for those kids who do excessive training mileage in hs - sounds like ur guy falls into this bucket. My estimate wouldn’t be relevant for those kids who are over training like ur guy
so not really silly my guy
Id say 5:40
Is 50 mpw with 37-40 mpw at 7:15-7:30 pace overtraining? 3-4 miles of reps, and 6-7 miles of threshold/tempo work constitutes overtraining?
no - it’s at the high end of reasonable though
banged out a 4:29 yesterday first 1600 - looks like I may need to recalibrate my goals 🐢
guess the answer to my question is “yes”
