His last 5000 was around 13:20. 1 year and 4 months ago he ran 13:15 indoors at BU.
Also, this is a good example for why I preach that after you race a 5k, you should believe in your mind that you will soon have that fitness for 10k. This is what excellent training and self-belief can do, especially when you're a younger runner and have no idea your potential.
No, and that’s my point. Some posters are trying to discount Young’s accomplishment, by comparing him to an Eritrean.
You are implying that Eritrea is somehow better than than the US? Eritrea is supposed to be one of the worst 5-10 countries in the world. PPP GDP per capita is $1800. That is less than half of Ethiopia. They have mandatory conscription. The country is led by a dictatorship, the president has been in power for 30 years. They maintain positive diplomatic relations with North Korea.
Compare that to the upbringing one receives in the US, and which person would you expect to be better?

Young proved that if you’re fast at one those distances, you’re going to be fast in the other. Excellent training and self-belief, is required for both. The 5000m is not like the 1500m.

I’m not saying that Habtom Samuel has the advantage but that Young should not be compared to foreigners unless he’s in an Olympic final. If we need to compare everyone to foreigners, 27:00 kind of sucks.
1. I don’t think Grant Fisher stuck in the pack just to get an easier ride and be efficient or smart. I think he sat there because he wanted to outkick people, just like he’s going to have to in Paris. Not that this was a full simulation, but the best available I’m sure, and so might as well take the opportunity to show he can do it.
2. Nico Young… amazing, and who isn’t a huge fan? Tremendous. Habtom Samuel too. … but about the Parker Wolfe comments sprinkled in this thread. I think it’s 100% clear that Nico is on a different plane right now. But Wolfe and some of the other guys (Robinson?) may be due for a bigger bump when they go pro. Main reason being that they are slated to gain from altitude in a way that Nico already does. … please don’t anyone say this takes away from Nico. He’s amazing. I just think it will also be interesting to see how these other suberb collegians are going to progress.

The 10K Olympic trials will be very interesting on who goes for just an Olympic spot or for a championship. Woody making it with the automatic standard means that they're gonna have to keep that race fast as his kick would probably take out Fisher and Young.
I think it goes without saying that Fisher is on a whole other level than everyone else, and was just waiting to kick.
With that being said, I noticed that as Nico was about to go with 150m~ to go, Fisher came up and sort of boxed him in. I’m curious how things would have played out if Nico moved a second sooner and was able to get around Ahmed before Fisher came up beside Ahmed.

You're wrong. The entire point of his race was to get the standard as efficiently as possible. He said so himself.
And that really wasn't much of a "kick" from Grant Fisher. He was just trying to do the bare minimum to finish first, that's all.
He'll have to do a lot better than that to outkick anyone in the Olympics.

Tough crowd.
of course the standard was the focus. The pace was sufficient for Grant to sit back and practice his finish. He said in his interview that the lead pack fell off of the pacing lights and had they fallen off by ten seconds he would have taken the lead to get back on pace but 4 seconds off the lights didn’t bother him because he would just have to drop a 59 lap to get back on.
Fisher is clearly in very good shape. Looked like he tempo ran that race and busted a move in the last straightaway. Very confident running with a nice gear change at 100m and again at 50m to go. He looked smooth and hardly winded after crossing the line. Everyone else was straining to the line with several collapsing once crossing the line.
Listening to his interviews and watching his two indoor races and now this 10k, he is his own master now, happy and confident with his training, coaching and living. Nice to see he made change and is hitting his stride during an Olympic year.
Not sure mentioned yet but anyone thoughts on nur? He was killing woody in a workout a month or so ago and this time last year he was destroying a lot of these guys (not fisher etc) in a 5k when he fell. I thought he’d be in the sub 27 group.

agree-great to see this and Grant is a class act and as mentioned in the post-race interview he admitted to not having to do much of the pace-setting work in order to get the standard and looked impressive in the past lap; Look forward to see what he can do this year!

America under trump and republicans: trump slump economic collapse, trump virus, country led by a dictator, maintained a love affair with North Korea and Russia.

I mean, I don’t even disagree with you… he’ll have to a lot better than that in the Olympics and blah, blah, blah. You are right. My point was that it was also maybe one small element he wanted to unfold depending how the race went. And it went great… his ‘kick’ was still likely contained and easy for him even off of a tough pace. Not too bad, and it was probably just fun for him to show both himself and everyone else that he was the one in control.
