Wondering how that will work. It says U20s on the first 2 afternoons of Nike Outdoor Nationals, but what about athletes that want to do both? Or different events, like 1500m for USAs and mile for HS. Or different weight implements for the throws?
And the entire U20 meet couldn't be contested on two afternoons, I don't think, so maybe there's more to the U20 meet beyond those days? A lot of unanswered questions.
FWIW, the World U20 champs are in Lima, Peru, August 26-31. That will be a hard sell for both preps and collegians for Team USA. The 2022 meet, and most other World U20s, have been in July. Note the 2021 meet in Kenya in August; US did not field a squad that year. I think Chile in October 2000 and Seoul in Sept. 92 had very weak US representation.
The World Athletics U20 Championships is a biennial world championships for the sport of athletics organised by the World Athletics, contested by athletes in the under-20 athletics age category (19 years old or younger on 31...
This is a huge win for Nike/NSAF as well as the National U20 meet. I had a few athletes considering trying to qualify for the U20 meet, but enjoyed the NBN meet. Now that they conflict, I think its easier for most parents to just book the flight and hotels for Nike now. How the season goes determines whether they compete in the Nike Nationals HS division or the U20 division. New Balance National's remaining advantage is convenience of travel and kids love the backpack. The top HS athletes have to decide between competing for a national high school title and trying to make the U20 team. This decision makes the wait between U20 nationals and worlds even longer. This also means U20 qualifying times need to be hit much earlier in the season...
Nike is playing a smart game to beat NB and this makes the U20 meet itself more attractive. However, needing to peak so early for the new date does hurt the US U20 program at the world level.
Hmm, I remember back in 2004 when Nike tried to choke the life out of a successful national high school cross country meet that had been in existence for 25 years.
Nike's modus operandi is to throw around their unlimited financial resources to crush the competition and bring every single track meet to the so called "Tracktown USA." Prety sad when a town that bills itself as "Tracktown USA" can't even fill the stands for the world championship track meet.
The major attraction of U20's for elite athletes is it serves as the qualifier for the World U20's BUT as of now the US WILL NOT be sending a team to Peru. Heard in NYC that Nike is lobbying USATF poobahs to send a team. The reason given by Mike Conley at USATF is that its too dangerous per our US State Dept warnings. Yet the exact same warning is on the State Dept page for The Bahamas and USATF still planning to send teams to that meet. The danger in Peru is not that heightened that a little extra money for security can't remedy. The top U20 athletes are being denied an opportunity to compete at World level. Skipping this is a sign of weakness by USATF and yet again their ignorance of how impactful the meet is for future global medalists careers.
The US sent a team to the last World U20s, when it was in Cali, Columbia, so I don't see why they couldn't this time. Here's a direct crime/safety comparison between the 2 cities -- they're almost identical overall.
usatf doesnt want to spend the money, theyre in the whole. nike wants to do this elite program. usatf wants them to pay for the u20 team. easy as that.
The US won't send U20 team to Peru? What are you basing that on?
In the recent Nike/U20 meet announcement, USATF said that they will "provide opportunities for the country’s best young athletes to represent the US on a global scale at U20 Championship events."
Do you have a statement from USATF that you can link to that says that they WON'T send a team to Peru?

I too have been told by an insider that as of now USATF is planning not to send the U20 team to Worlds.
Is USATF planning to announce that publicly BEFORE the US U20 Championship starts on June 12?
Or is USATF planning to let all the top finishers think that they qualified for the World U20 Championships, and then pull the rug out from underneath them a few weeks later?
