Axel is possibly more than 5 seconds slower than Laros in the 800m but he has a diesel engine so the longer and muddier it goes the better is Axel.
People on these boards have a short memory. Axel completely destroyed the field 2 years ago when he was only 17. Last year, however, he had some issues and DNF.

Having a better 800m time is rarely relevant for a kick in a cross country race. After a tough race I'd always bet on the longer distance guy to outkick the short distance guy (different if the short distance guy was able to take it a bit easy of course)
Is not Laros strictly a speed guy 800-1500? Is he expected to win such a race?
No, Laros has quite a big range. He ran 7:48 in the 3000m at 17 and 13:23 in the 5000m when just turned 18. He is European U20 champion in the 5000m (and in the 1500m; he didn´t run the 3000m but beat the 3000m winner (Swedish Jonathan Grahn) in the 5000m final.

I guess that Axel has a higher mileage than Lillesoe. Axel is the born long distance runner; Lillesoe initially considered himself a 1500m runner but I think he now goes for the 5000m.

What slow races - these Euro kids would be way behind the Americans from NXN (worse conditions than Belgium). 16xx and 18xx. wouldn't even get top 20 at NXN. Just shows how bad Europeans are compared to American HSers. Of course our College system must be bad for us not to dominate at the Senior level versus the Africans, but then not many Euro's even bother to do World XC these days, guess it is because they are so bad.
The headline might even be 1:44 800m man almost wins Euro U20 xc. That shows range that on the European level hasn't really been shown since Steve Ovett.

Did you actually watch the (MUD) race?
Which U20 American runner do you think can beat Laros or Axel on that course?
