BYU's 1-2 runners ran well. The number 3,4,&5 runners just blew up and faded badly, especially over the last kilometer.
BYU’s #2 would not have scored for either of the top 2 teams.
BYU's #2 today is normally their #7. Getting 50 points from her was a great result.
Apparently they rolled the dice and went for the win with 4 in the top 25 early on. It worked for Frentheway who had her best race of the year scoring 12 but the other 3 blew up. Their 5 and 6 also blew up so there was no one to stop bleeding.

but you don't roll the dice by sprinting like idiots the first 1k.
NC State went from 220 at 1k to 123 at the finish, improving 97 points.
OSU went from 436 to 156 which is crazy but a solid 3rd.
Even NAU probably went out too fast falling back from 119 to 124.
Simply put - BYU and NAU blew their chances in the first 1k.

in hindsight this makes sense but with Chmiel out and Tynnysma struggling both NAU and BYU must have figured get out quick and bury NC State early. but Tynnysma and Bush never faltered, in fact caught runners at the end.
for BYU it was a hail mary because I don't think they had the horses to hold off both NAU/NCSt but for NAU the plan to go out fast made perfect sense and would have worked if Stearns didn't have her worst race in years. she's gone out hard at every race this season and not once did she blow up like she did today.
Chisolm of ND is the one who made the first K as fast as it was. Why I do not know. She gapped the field and did not really slow down so the field went fast as well.

Got to be on TV for three minutes! Her family was probably going nuts. Why not?

Diljeet is a good coach no denying that. But she often told us “nothing good happens in the back!” Referencing races and how running patiently in the beginning causes more chaos than not. However, I used to feel stronger letting the field go a bit and catching them at the end. I didn’t end up running well because I wasn’t a jeet drone. Then again the poor women didn’t today either so who knows. They’ll bounce back!

maybe they made a team decision that they would risk flaming out to get on the podium rather than run safe and go for something like 10th.
im okay with it if they understood the risks and decided it was worth it to throw caution to the wind

Brilliant move! She sped up the race and caused some teams to go out too fast (BYU!) ND ended up on the podium because of that!
