Some of the reported Chicago Marathon mile splits made no sense to us. Both Kelvin Kiptum and Sifan Haass ran ran super fast for mile 19 but super slow for mile 20? So we did a little investigation and found that for Kiptum's mile splits to be accurate, he'd have had to run sub-4 mile pace during both mile 19 and mile 22.
Kiptum's reported 4:21 19th mile and 4:18 22nd mile were the two fastest splits ever recorded in a marathon, but after an investigation by LetsRun.com, race organizers have confirmed discrepancies with those splits.
Marathon experts Helmut Winter and Sean Hartnett have gone all the way to Abu Dhabi to remeasure the course and have found the 34th kilometer was between 195.8 and 199.6 meters too short. Our best theory is the locals wanted...
Not surprising. I found some odd mile splits in every race I've ever ran (and not talking gps errors - use manual splits). London 2022 had some wonky sign boards around 18-30 kms itself which really threw me off and screwed up my pacing math.
For marathon running now I try to focus less on the individual miles and kms and more on the 5k splits. However even with that Chicago this year had the 10k sign in a different spot than the mat (by say 2-5m). So my official splits for 10k and 15k are different by a few seconds.

Or even an interview with Parker Valby and/or her coach. She seems to be on another level. Was she able to train all summer without injury? How many miles is she running per week now? Is she still cross-training?
I have run the Crim 10 mile race in Flint many times and they use a blue paint throughout the course and have accurate miles every year. You would think a world class marathon would have accurate splits

Requesting anonymity would make sense (and also be funny) if the whistleblower was Kipchoge.
The important question is whether the world record is valid or not.If its valid then this story is in bad faith.If its not valid then clarifications need to made by IAAF imidiately. I look forward to the return of sportsmanship spirit .Nowadays there is so much negativity in sport .When an athlete performs give him or her their worth dues not look for any negative angle to attach to their performance. This story stinks.

I have a hard enough time just running a marathon, I don't know how to do math while running a marathon!
bad splits raise at least a little doubt about the competency of the race organizers. This, in turn, calls into question their ability to measure and mark the course correctly, which could affect the record.

I agree, if it doesn't invalidate the WR, then it is meaningless.
