This is a surprise? a sub 4 type and probably could have run 8:30's? I thought he did, but says 8:46 on IAAF site
Not so much a surprise. I thought he was going to be the best of last years group
Nice performance by Hansen. It's so hard to predict how runners will develop. I like his basic body mechanics, that's something to build on. But trying to go out on a limb and say who will be the best from last year's talented h.s. seniors is so hard.

Do you realize the quality and depth of the competition in this race? The 4 guys who beat Hansen have 5k PBs of 13:13, 13:19, 13:11, and 13:29. This is very impressive for his first collegiate race.
He was never the best guy last year though. 2nd and 3rd in big races, but never the best. That's why it's a bit of a surprise that he's A LOT better than them now, everyone except Birnbaum, and this race may have been better than Birnbaum's 3rd place tbh.
Regardless, it's a great thing to have so many freshmen running solid (and great) performances. Last year the freshmen tanked at NCAAs. This year it looks like there could be multiple guys contending for top 10. It's early, but based on the sheer number of fast times from last year, I'd bet this class is gonna end up one of the deepest ever.
