2 months of base mileage is a pretty common part of most xc training plans and doesn't require much instruction

I traveled and raced for a team that beat NAU in cross pretty recently (this is during their current dynasty).

Our coach didn’t give too much instructions for cross summer training, and rarely answered our text messages during the off season. We pretty much did what we knew what was right based off common sense and what worked in the previous years.

It sounds like you’re mad that Jerry doesn’t fit the Cinderella story you’ve made up in your head about how coaching is supposed to be. Maybe you should reflect that upon yourself as to why you aren’t in his position and coaching elite athletes.

Believe it or not these guys are adults. They should know at this level that 60-90 minutes a day of controlled running is what you do over the summer. It’s not rocket science. But what I really like about it is that the athlete gets to decide the details within that common knowledge framework. Some days they might go longer, shorter, faster, slower.
Runners, especially American society ones, tend to be type A ocd people. Give them an exact schedule and they will ignore what they feel to “complete” the schedule. The East Africans go more by feel and it works for them.

Yes and No- listen to them talk they sound like total idiots. Some incoming freshman will have something to prove and try and train like crazy with way too many miles and injure themselves. They should be given at least parameters. I know one of the freshman for a fact runs insane miles to the point they injured themselves so badly they lost a year of competing in HS. I hope these two are given a dose of reality when they get to Eugene. They seem way too full of themselves. Jerry will humble them quickly.
