Well, he went for the record and was right on pace through 5600. If anything you could say he needs to set realistic goals.
Shows how strong the record is. Maybe if Lex was in a perfect scenario where he could get on a train and split 14:20 through 5k, he’d have a chance, but I’d bet against it happening on a single attempt.
Needs to have something left in the tank for the Brooks PR meet in 11 days . . . where he'll be lining up against Birnbaum, Burns, Simmons, Jones, et al in another hs record attempt . . . this time over 2 miles. . .

That's going to be a great race.
I still can't believe that Leo and Lex won't be there, especially since they said last year that the 2 mile record was a goal of theirs.
To be honest I feel like this record is only "tough" because normal high school training is completely inadequate to run a fast 10k. In my opinion Lex's 13:33 is much more impressive than 28:32, but in order for Lex to run 28:32 he'd have to train specifically for the 10k for an extended period.
Theyre talking about the dual meets in the Summer, which was the bonus for making the US Junior team in June.
My recollection is that Rudy was shooting for the OT qualifier. He did get it but ran something like 30:30 at the trials.
The previous year, he and Hulst ran 29:11 at the U.S. championships and then finished 1-2 against the Soviets at a much slower time on a hot day.
Thanks! I just had a vague recollection. Chapa, Hulst, and McChesney were the top three before Gorze and all from 1976! Transplant Gorze to '76 and give him multiple attempts like the others had. The list might be a little different, but 28:32 is a whopper. 29:00 going into college shows not only talent, but also an aptitude for hard work.
