The piece includes this:
Wetmore’s current three-year contract expires on June 30, 2024. It includes a clause that he can be terminated for cause for, among other reasons, conduct or coaching practices contrary to “recognized conduct and techniques” and that “in the determination of the athletics director, endangers, or could endanger, student athlete health, safety, or welfare.” Wetmore makes $160,000 yearly, with additional performance-based bonuses.
This isn't that complicated really.
1) There are lots of eating disorders in any and all sports where weight is important- football, wrestling, and yes track. There are probably more eating disorders than average at CU as Wetmore refuses to not act like weight is an issue.
2) The way Wetmore deals with weight is probably not how you should deal with it in the year 2023.
3) This isn't a fireable offense. Because he used a caliper 20+ years ago, you want him fired?
4) If I was the AD, I'd issue a statement and say, "Coach Wetmore is one of the greatest coaches in CU history but everyone can get better. This year we will fly in ** a top nutritionist to educate the coaching staff and training staff on the top practices. Moving forward, the training staff will handle all weight related issues. We're sorry not everyone loved their time on the team."
5) My prediction is the Colorado won't do any of this. They'll either fire him or wimp out and not renew Wetmore's contract next year when he's 70. I imagine they were getting ready to can him and then the support from all the Olympians surprised them them.
