May 15, 1983. American Tom Petranoff shatters the world record javelin throw by 3 meters, a throw which led to alterations in the javelin’s design in order to shorten distances. To honor that day’s 40th anniversary - a fellow...
Thomas Alan Petranoff (born April 8, 1958) is a retired American track and field athlete who competed in the javelin throw. He held the world record (old implement javelin) from May 1983 to July 1984; his 99.72 m (327 ft) thr...
Tom is a living legend. Not many people can say they were so good that they caused rules to have to be changed. He also invented the Turbojav, which revolutionized jav training.
Uwe Hohn is a German javelin thrower who holds the eternal record courtesy a 104.8m throw. He has also coached Neeraj Chopra. Know his achievements and medals won.
That 104.80m will be 40 years of age, in June 2024.
It is time to move the javelin out of the stadium. Let the athletes throw it as far as possible.
Could you image "officials" changing the weight of a baseball, the shape of a football, the size of basketball because athletes were hitting too many more runs, throwing the ball too far down the field, of scoring too many point? Now about forcing swimmers to wear baggy suits to slow them down, or forcing cyclers to use single-gear bikes?
I remember this record throw just prior to the LA Olympics-the javelin landed on the edge of the infield....I thought that Petronoff's record was unbeatable-nope!
Which means designing it to force it to drop like a wounded bird, resulting in the javelin not traveling as far. The discus strikes the ground and bounces along. Why didn't the authorities resign it for less flat landings?
The hammer was thrown out of the stadium. I like the idea of redesign the long throw implements to let the athletes throw them as far as possible. It is sill to keep changing the design and rules to force the throwing distance to be less. Records cannot be compared, past to present. The old WR. The new WR. The even newer WR. Nonsense.

Rules are changed all the time in order to keep things on a similar competition level. Golf just implemented new restrictions on balls and drivers were limited a couple of decades ago. Running just implemented stack height restrictions on shoes. Swimming banned certain types of suits. Baseball has new limits on bats all the time (at lower levels). Weren't the baseballs themselves changed this year? Football has implemented restrictions on balls in the no too distant past (K balls). Basketball moved back the 3 point line not too long ago.
The javelin specs were not changed because of Tom's or Uwe's throws.
The change in design was already in the works before their throws to ensure less flat landings.

Because nobody was throwing it onto the track or out of the stadium, and maybe it was landing without making a mark.
If and when they do put jav out with the hammer, let them finally throw sidearm. Records will be destroyed with either the old or new design.

Imagine banning carbon plate shoes like the stick-in-the-muds are always calling for on here?
Terry Bradshaw threw the javelin outside of the LSU stadium and into the parking lot at the Louisiana State meet.
Matt London threw it all the way across a Super Walmart, over the housewares and ladies clothing departments and it landed in electronics. And he did it in cargo shorts and trainers.

Petranoff came to NYC in the early 90s to introduce the turbo jav to HS coaches. At his clinic he would throw the turbo jav into big barrels over 100 feet away.
