In a statement to ABC News, Salazar said: “Any claim that Ms. Goucher was sexually assaulted by me is categorically untrue. I’ve never sexually assaulted Ms. Goucher and never would’ve done so. The accusation is deeply hurtful and abhorrent and contrary to my fundamental beliefs as a husband, father and deeply devout Catholic.”
I think the issue for some would be that he hasn't been found guilty in a court of law. Banning him from the sport may have been influenced by any number of factors and we don't know much about the SafeSport "court." Calling it a kangaroo court is a bit unfair, but it certainly doesn't have the same burden of proof as a criminal court.
I believe her completely. There's no way she'd be putting herself through this if it weren't true.
Do I think Salazar is a Larry Nassar case of chronic sex abuse? No. I think he had a real obsession with Kara and abused his position as her coach and a dad figure she looked up to. She was ready to be molded by him, like Rupp, but the difference was he was attracted to her. There were witnesses to him trying to kiss her on a plane.
Am glad Safe Sport kept her anonymous at the time. People would've given less weight to the severity of what he did because of her history with him. In any case, he deserves to be banned from the sport. As a coach, he could do this again to someone else. And then be that chronic abuser. Good for Kara for putting herself out there to save someone else from having to go through the same.
She clearly states that he sexually assaulted her...TWICE! Did she share this information with Adam or anyone else? She says she didn't, WHY NOT! I understand that after the first time she was confused and uncomfortable. After the second assault in Portugal, she needed to tell someone immediately and leave the team. This is serious sh^t! Why did she wait until her book comes out to make this public? Why is Alberto massaging her? This in itself is highly inappropriate and shouldn't have been allowed. I'm sorry, but Kara and Adam should've shut this down ASAP! Yeah, it's uncomfortable and awkward, but it needed to be done.
If Alberto denies the assaults, which he has, he has a clear defamation lawsuit against Kara. If he was a Nike employee (I believe he was) at the time these assaults took place, Nike should step up and defend him. You can't just go accusing people of sexual assault without proof and or evidence. On the flip side, if he did in fact assault her, Kara needs to prove this, not just put it in a book and go on national television accusing him. Maybe she is ramping up for a major lawsuit against Alberto and Nike. I can't see why she would divulge this information without moving forward with a lawsuit, unless she can't prove the assaults and just wants to make his life a living hell.
At this point, there is no reason not to believe her. I just question the timing of exposing this and what is the end game.
Which is why it was disappointing that she spearheaded the public letter in support of Mark Wetmore when other former CU runners voiced problems with him about weight. The gist of the letter was, "We never experienced this while being coached by Mark." By that standard, former NOP members could cast doubt on Kara's accusations by publicly saying, "Alberto never sexually assaulted me."
Harsh but accurate take here. That was frustrating for her to do. Worth noting, she took down her post and apologized for posting it, realizing the hypocrisy of it all. Credit to her for that.
I believe Kara 100% on the allegations. I have no reason not to. Alberto was possessive and controlling in every aspect of his life--why wouldn't that cross boundaries into sexual abuse? She was the only female runner Alberto coached for years. Now, you can absolutely be abused be someone who is not attracted to you, but reading the book, it seemed like Alberto was coming from a place of...perverted attraction and a need to control. He cornered her on an international flight and she had no where to go but the gross plane bathroom and hide there. He also made disparaging comments about Adam, trying to put a wedge in their marriage, one that Kara pushed back on. he also used his position to gain access to her body during massages, which in the mid 00's was totally accepted.
It's just "he said, she said", so of course her side wins out. This plays out as title IX at colleges every day.
So she ran 30:55 and 14:55 pre super shoes and you call that "slow." I'm curious about your "fast" PRs.
This is the laziest response to a slow time criticism. There is absolutely no reason a rando needs to run a fast time just to be eligible to critique an elite as slow. Fact is American distancers are slow on the global stage.

Why do you default to believing a serial abuser
Who is the serial abuser? I think an issue with the the believability of Kara here is that the alleged conduct is out of character for Salazar and Kara and Adam "Bambi" Goucher have an axe to grind. On the other hand, the so-called doping findings against Salazar were believable because Salazar took pride in giving his athlete every possible advantage.

This is ridiculous, going from personality to sexual assault. And you are plain wrong that Kara was the only female runner he coached.

This made me laugh. Even on a serious sexual abuse thread, Letsrun can always go back to this theme. Kind of glad for it. Better than whatever was posted that ended up deleted.

Talk about lazy. In addition to being leagues faster than you or the other rando, she was so slow that she won a silver and bronze medal in her day against international competition.

Exactly, fast runners win gold and set world records. Go home now.

I dislike both Salazar or Goucher and don't trust either to tell the absolute truth. Both are shady in my opinion.
I wouldn't put it past Salazar to do what Goucher is accusing him of doing, but why did she beg him to take her back after both occurrences of the alleged sexual assault? I understand it can be difficult in abusive relationships, but she had a chance to get away from him and yet she still wanted him to continue coaching her.
