That way seems a bit purposely to disadvantage an athlete’s bargaining power, but the power structure likely thinks it’s justified, based on resources getting the athlete to their original choice in the first place.
Please tell us what Mountain West teams and other P5 programs are doing this regularly. Regularly? Sure it happens from time to time but regularly? Really?
You guys just cannot be this naive, obtuse, nor pollyannish! Not to mention you sound ignorant.
I love the psuedo experts that quote only specific rules but always forget a very important one, tampering is a one way street. Meaning, if the student athlete wants to transfer they are free to reach out to whoever they want. The coaches MUST advise them to enter the portal before they can talk directly. However, club coach, high school coach, parent, representative can freely probe. NO ONE wants to risk their scholarship on a whim.
To further muddy the waters, applying for the portal and when your name hits the portal are NOT the same date nor thing. Hate to bust some of your hate bubbles for UCLA and Brosnan but there is nuance here

Parent? I don't think so. And what's a representative?
ucla has better coach than duke but she had better training partner in duke in AMINA MATOUG ... shes a beast
What if more prodigies better than Frias transfer to UCLA for a better coach?
I was just going to ask, where are all the current ucla team members going to transfer to now that ucla is getting all of these transfers? Or maybe they don't have a limit on numbers at ucla...
people who grow up accustomed to a certain amount of sunlight year-round tend to have less vitality when they move to a locale with significantly less sunlight relative to what they're used to at that time of year
put simply: a moderately high and relatively steady solar irradiance year round tends to be best for athletes
manhattan beach gets 17% more global horizontal irradiance than durham; 5.18 kWh/m2/day v. 4.43 kWh/m2/day. higher highs and higher lows.
Why would you enter the transfer portal without already knowing where you wanted to go?
For real, let's say you want to grad transfer and you want to see if anyone you would normally not think of comes calling. You create an open market and see what happens.
In theory, because that's the way system is supposed to work, no contact before in portal. In practice though deal is done already, then boom in and out of portal as a formality.
For the coaches that complain about this, they ought to look in the mirror.
How many of them had their current job locked up before the university even posted the position?

The decrease in sunlight from moving to a different locale can result in some degree of depression.

seasonal affective disorder is a real thing, no doubt.
i moved from socal to hawaii and notice the difference in vitality. the highs here are barely below socal in the summer, but the lows for GHI are about 35% higher. socal winters are depressing in comparison.
Nothing good was going to happen after the way that relay ended and the loss of the conference title. Every wart and emotion and ugly trait is going to show from the coaching staff. We don't begin to see or hear even a fraction of it. Is this what I want to deal with for the next 3 years?
It indeed switched so quickly. Not long before that relay screw up Frias was sprinting full blast during the final meters to surprisingly win the first section of the 3000.

There is no muddying the waters here. It’s simple: when your name shows up in the portal - any coach can talk to you - period. There is no applying. You just tell compliance - I want to go into the portal. Say it takes them a day to put you in - for that day other coaches still can’t talk to you. It’s pretty simple. An athlete reaches out, coach checks the portal. No name = can’t talk to you unless you’re in the portal. Name = talk. There is no nuance here.
