I flew 1500 miles to get to the race.
We rented a VRBO 2.5 miles from the park, thinking we could warm up on the way there. Given the weather conditions, we had one of our open runners shuttle us there in the rental van. We warmed up around the VRBO, changed to race gear, and headed over.
When we were dropped off, it was 20 minutes to the scheduled race time, so we did our last strides/warmup to the finish line, where we dropped our one single dry bag, and then headed to the start.
So, in our case, there was no "staying dry/warm," when the race was postponed indefinitely. That's where some better planning/communication could've happened. If they had said, "we won't start for until 1130 at the earliest" ...or ANYTHING like that, we would've been able to find another layer, change shoes, etc..
The way it played out was worst case scenario for folks like us (and there were many). But it WAS an experience none of us will forget. I didn't hear too many masters runners complaining too much either, we're all experienced enough to know that _____happens, and with lots of moving parts, simple solutions are sometimes hard to implement.
We had In N out immediately after the open race, then had great seafood at a local sitdown restaurant later that night. That alone made the trip worth it!
