Oops, sorry.
I think everyone is overreacting. There are millions of people living in the vicinity of the shooter. There are more people dying of traffic accidents each day in that area than are being shot.
I don't live in Virginia and haven't been following every detail of this story, but if there was a sniper in my area I would be scares shitless everytime I stepped out of my house. This guy is a terrorist, pure and simple, and from everything I have read, his targets are random. Just say a prayer for everyone and hope that no more innocent victims are hurt.
put yourself in the place of a school administrator-
take my chances and possibly have a student snipered by a single bullet, regardless of the highly publicized danger in my area. which, of course, will bring negative publicity to you and your school for your lack of precautions, more pain and suffering among students and staff than you want to imagine, angry parents, upset parents, and knowing that you could have prevented it.
or
cancel activities that put a student in any chance of harms way. reschedule meets and games.
i don't know about you, pad, but i'm thinking they made the right choice.
I'm not one to say that the sniper situation is good, but DC is a lot calmer than it was 6, 8 or even 10 yrs ago. I did an internship in that area while still in school and I came home and turned on the TV and there were three shootings within 1/4 mile of each other in less than 30 minutes.
It's a lot better than what it used to be from what I have heard.
Not only are the XC races cancelled, they have cancelled most of the road races in the area. The reaction is extreme. When there are car accidents we don't stop driving.
People haven't stopped pumping gas either.
