Ran a marathon this weekend six weeks after the first appearance of symptoms (fever). I had missed only a few days of running and resumed speed work at ten days, but was weakened by fighting the virus. Feeling pretty good by five weeks, but still not 100%, still having some airways irritation, and not sure what to expect on race day.

Result: about ten minutes slow, and second in the age group by a good deal less than that. So I was able to run OK, but not great. Mainly I am grateful and relieved that COVID hasn't ruined me. I feel like I will get back to 100% very soon. I hope other Letsrunners have similar or better experiences with the virus.

I'd say you lost after having COVID, but not necessarily because of COVID. Maybe you just had a crappy day?

Covid is less dangerous than the hysteria surrounding it suggests. Most fit healthy people will get minor symptoms for a few days. I think it would be quite rare for any middle aged runner (proper runner not occasional jogger) to still have symptoms 5 weeks later.

Great job "doing your own research" 🙄

No research. Just anecdotal evidence from people i run with every weekend along with what you see the pros saying online. None had anything worse than typical flu symptoms.

The thing is the official narrative is not wrong but it isnt applicable to healthy runners. We have a much stronger respiratory system than your average member of the public who never exercises.

The government approach was to close everything and isolate people when really it should have been more focused on getting people exercising more. For me closing schools was particularly unforgiveable because covid is of negligible danger to kids. Their futures suffered because of the cowardice and laziness of adults.

Perhaps -- I am not middle aged, but older. Recovery took longer than days. In fact lung function rests just days before the race, 5 weeks after infection (abnormally high exhaled nitric oxide), showed airways inflammation. Getting better now though.

Sucks you had covid leading up but don't be that guy claiming they should have done better. You either ran 10 minutes faster or you didn't

I agree completely and won't be that guy. Just sharing the experience anonymously in the thought that others might be interested in an anecdote about COVID's effects on competitive running. My take is that it can slow you down for a while but it won't knock you out of the game -- that should be encouraging.
