Although there are exceptions, on average, age matters in endurance races. In the Tour de France, there is a special jersey for the top rider under 25.
No one cares that a 25 year old is in college. Good for him or her. But we can’t pretend as if being 25 and having 6 years of college running behind you isn’t different than being 19 and having one or two.
Why is this place so obsessed with the age of NCAA athletes? Plenty of people don't go right from HS to college. I took 4 years to figure out what I wanted to be before going so I graduated as an undergrad at 25. Got my MBA in my 40s and could have run since I had eligibility.
You need to beat the people you race no matter their age.

Age doesn't matter for eligibility though and eligibility is all that matters for who you race in college. Finishing 4th or 5th behing 3 or older, but still eligible, runners isn't the same as winning as implied earlier.
The best runner wins and a 3 or 4 year age difference isn't significant. 20 years? Sure.

Sure, technically this is true. But we all know the 24 year old runner is going to have an advantage over a 20 year old due to the several extra years of training. I don't know why this is so hard for you to grasp.
