Truman literally had that estimate of a million casualties--not stated whether U.S. or combined U.S. and Japanese--in his decision folder prior to dropping the bomb. Other reasons considered were to stop the rapid Soviet advance through Asia, to use to make the Soviets fear us, to try out the technology, etc.
