Good quality standardized ginsing may provide a mild mental boost which may translate into being a little more mentally prepared for a workout/run,, but that's about it. At least that's been my experience. A good night sleep/being well rested does the same. Google the research on ginsing and athletic performance and you'll find mixed conclusions at best.
Will taking ginsing or other things like Ginko make one test positive? Thought they were on the banned list. Also, where can one find banned lists? USATF site?

It can boost performance, but it can also cause tight muscles.

I concur. It can be especially problematical if you also consume caffiene.
