I swear the only thing you guys are obsessed with are times.
Just cause Jakob has good times, you think Jakob is gonna come and win the 5000m, while not even ranked, cause he's only run two 5000m in the LAST 2 YEARS.
1500m and 5000m are not even close to the same races.....
Okay? We watched him beat many of the top contenders a year ago over 5,000m, its not exactly a leap to think he has a shot to win. You can replace Jakob in your post with El G and the same sentiment would ring true, and I think he did pretty well in the 5.
There is a great chance he will be in the Top5 but is he the best kicker at that time? I'm not sure about it because kicking in the 1500m is not the same as kicking in the 5000m.
The best tactic for him is to site and kick and not play the hero in the last 400m (as he did in 2019).
I don't think he will press the pace after his 1500 experience last night. I think he learned how important it is to conserve energy. In his post-race interview, he basically said he thought he was fit enough to win no matter what, even holding the lead for so long and fighting off Tim.
Now that he knows that isn't the case, he will be more reserved in the 5000, and I don't think he will win, but I think he will medal.
You have misunderstood. He is angry for himself for not running even faster in the middle part. Im not saying this is what he will do in the 5000, but he absolutely believe he should have pressed on even harder, and that he had the fitness for it.
Well, he has a good habit of believing in himself, so maybe he could have pressed even harder in the middle, but I don't think so. They went through 1200m in 3:48.1. Jakob was probably hurting pretty badly at that point given that he had already led for some 650m at that pace.
Even El G in 3:26 shape would have been hurting badly in that situation. Better, I think, was to relax a little longer and then take the lead on the back stretch with less than 700m to go.
I guess really only Jakob knows for sure how he felt. Watching from the outside, I can only guess.
There are going to be a lot of guys going into that 5,000m race with some serious axes to grind.
Jakob- pissed to lose the 15 Barega- Not even in the medals in the 10, for a guy that that sort of bonk never happens to Kimeli - Feels Chelimo stole a medal from him last year with some dicey moves (might have a point) Aregawi- Doesn't want to get the reputation as a choker Fisher- Knows he was so close to that bronze
Lower on the scale: Kejelcha - I think he is tired of being second fiddle in Ethiopia

You're really comparing Jakob to El G? El G?? The man who closed the 2004 Athen's 1500m in a 1:46 800? Jakob wins one olympic gold and next thing you know, you think he's even close to comparable to the GOAT?
Jakob has one olympic gold and one world championship silver. El G has two olympic golds and one olympic silver. Four world championship golds and two world championship silvers. WORLD RECORDS that have stood for over 20 years.
Just because he had a good 5000 in Florence a year ago, doesn't make him the favorite by any means. Especially after watching last night's race. Personally, I don't think he'll medal. I see him snagging fourth place, being beaten out by the east africans.

Take a chill pill my god. I didn't say he was as good as El G, just that a similar sentiment could have been applied to him in '03/'04 given that he was a 1500m runner with very little 5,000 experience.
And I never called him the favorite, stop projecting. He absolutely has as good of a chance to mix it up as anyone not named Cheptegei.

I understand the sentiment you're getting at. I, personally, don't thing the sentiment rings true, hence my comments and thoughts. Would you go on to say the sentiment holds true for Wightman now that he has won gold in the 1500 just as El G did in 04? El G is in a league of his own, so I don't think the comparisons to be great.
What I don't understand is where projecting comes into play here. If this is a debate between athletes and their abilities, let's keep it between athletes and their abilities. No need to accuse me of using a psychological defense mechanism to cope with my negative emotions. That wouldn't quite make sense in this context regardless.
If my use of the word 'favorite' was wrong, or upsetting to you, I apologize. With you referencing him potentially winning, and comparing his ability to follow suit of El G, it seemed as if you believed him to be the choice for gold.
I can definitely see him mixing it up with the field, as I mentioned in my previous post, but he is not a clear cut favorite in my opinion. I believe guys like Barega and Cheptegei (and maybe we start to throw in Grant Fisher here) with exceptional strength and the capability of closing in a 53/54 will keep him off the podium in the final lap.

Bro you’re the upset one. Homie is spitting straight facts and all you can do is get upset at him . Where’s your facts?? Lol Jakob fanboy
I think Jakob will win the 5000m. The silver in the 1500m was actually GOOD for him. He made mistakes and paid for them, and maybe now he learns from them.
If it is a slow pace, he will smile on the last 3-4 laps and pull an El G 2004.
If it is a fast pace, he'll still win. Jakob can eat 60sec laps for breakfast.
Some guys have that 10000m in their legs. It matters. Sure, 3 rounds of 1500m is something - a good warmup for 5000m!! :)
I predict slow first half and fast second half. 3000m in 7:55, then a 5min last 2000m.
(I also think his lack of 5000m races is a GOOD thing. Something refreshingly novel, instead of gutting out 56sec laps.)
I enjoy how the Jakob haters are downvoted into oblivion. Jakob is a strength runner so the 5000 more his wheelhouse. Given all the stars in the 5000, it will be an amazing race to watch. I like Jakob's chances for gold.
So why does he consistently enter in the event that is "not his wheelhouse?"

Yeah, his 3:46.46 recent mile really shows he lacks mile speed (insert major sarcasm).
