You aren't wrong - Tallahassee has an airport 15 minutes form the course, Valdosta GA is 45 min, Jacksonville, 2hrs, panama city 2 hrs, Gainesville 2hrs, Sanford 3 hrs, Pensacola 3 hrs Orlando 4 hrs Tampa 4hrs Atlanta 4.5hrs - Plenty of options to fly in to Tallahassee and or get close, possibly add to your vacation by visiting a nearby city.
I live five miles from the course, and my three sons run many of their middle school and high school races on it, including the Florida State Championship. It gets better and better each year, and is a terrific place to watch a race. There are multiple paths through the middle of the course, so you can see the runners two or three times each lap. And the community is used to hosting large events like Seminole football games. There are direct flights into Tallahassee from Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, and DC, so pretty easy to get in and out of.
I traveled to a handful of world cross country championship meets, a long weekend vacation between indoor and outdoor seasons. I'll gladly go to Tallahassee in late March.
Having seen them run in open fields and around horse tracks I'm not concerned about level of difficulty.
The intention is to make Eugene look exciting and cosmopolitan, but it's a nice course, not pancake flat but not nearly as hilly as it could have been in other parts of Tallahassee where there are some very steep hills and rolling terrain, and the weather is not as horrible in Tallahassee in March as it is from late April to late October.
