Shelby just posted on Instagram: "I’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure out what to say here and in the end, I’m not sure there are any good words for it. Last week, I was informed that I lost my appeals and my ban will be upheld. No reason has been given yet for why they were dismissed. I was told from the start that it was a long shot; it’s extremely hard to overturn these cases and I shouldn’t get my hopes up. I had to try anyway. I had to fight for myself, my career, and my reputation because I am innocent. The truth hasn’t won here and that’s devastating. Up until this point, I had been advised to lay low and not say or do anything in order to not jeopardize my appeal process. I think this was best because I also wasn’t ready to talk about it. I needed time for myself to process everything that’s happened and to start working on how to move forward. I appreciate people being understanding and giving me the space for that. I do believe that there are flaws in the anti-doping system who’s unfair practices result in unjust outcomes. I believe it’s broken. I also believe that there are other innocent athletes who have, and will continue to be, affected by this system. This is a problem and it needs to be addressed. I hope as I continue to move forward that I can use my experience to help change it."
I don't think anyone believes the tainted burrito explanation with the exception of a very small number here. Tainted supplements is more plausible and the Ross Tucker piece that he did for Letsrun offers some arguments in support of that. In any event, it doesn't really matter much at this point, it's over.
The tainted burrito and tainted supplements are just as implausible as each other. All she had to do was to provide supplements to be tested.
What is up next? Tainted air that she breathed? perhaps it was the shampoo that she used...
Not a tainted legal supplement, one of those steroid precursors mentioned in the Ross Tucker article which can be purchased at Amazon. Tucker also mentioned those tainted supplements are known to have a similar isotope to what was found in her system.
It also would explain why she didn't offer to have it tested, because it would have never helped her case. At the end of the day, it's still cheating but it seems like a possibility (much moreso than the burrito).
Has Emma Coburn been called on her B.S. on here yet?
Miss Emma with the most infamous anti-doping post calling Ruth Jebet a CHEATER CHEATER PUMPKIN EATER who went and liked Shelby's post, thus showing support.
I guess when it doesn't affect you and when it's your fellow white runner friend, you come to defense.

several times in every Shelby thread…including this one now.
BTW I am revolted by Shelby. What a disgrace she is to the sport.
She could have been anything. She could have done anything. This isn't some story like Faith Kipyegon, who won the Olympics and then her village got electricity for the first time. She was a privileged white American kid who could have gone to college, gotten a job, an apartment, a 401K and run as a hobby on the side. She chose to be a pro runner. she should have respected and honored the sport and her choice. If she couldn't make it clean, then don't make it at all. fall back on something else like dozens of other American runners end up doing. Leave, at least with your integrity.
But she was greedy. 49 seconds off of her 5K PR by 2017, and take an additional 24 seconds between 2017-2018 for that American record. She even shocked her coaches with her progress. Shalane had to scramble to get more and more fitness. Then take an additional 11 seconds off of that time for a 14:23. She blew Jenny Simpson, the world silver medalist, out of the water for the US Title in the 1500 in 2018. Got an American record 3:54.99 out of that too in 2019. She went from a formidable US competitor to unbeatable. In her fourth year as a pro she became a dominant runner for the first time in her life. Even in high school, and college, she was always good but never dominant. But her hairline receded, her facial structure expanded and she packed on muscle. And she became unbeatable.
Her mother, her uncle and her sister are heavily involved in the sport. her friends, her teammates her competitors all in the sport but didn't matter. What prompted that selfish choice? What caused her to take this path when she didn't have to? Didn't she realize how she could embarrass those people if she was caught?
I wonder if she felt bad for Jenny Simpson when she embarrassed her at the US Champs. I wonder if she felt guilty when Rachel Schneider had to graciously thank her for letting her know that her fourth place finish at USAs was good enough for the world champs team since Shelby would not be running the 5K. I wonder if Sifan's blatant doping and cheating made her feel a bit justified.
I'm not going to write her off as a narcissist or a sociopath. No, a personality disorder would be too easy of an excuse. Shelby was just a callow, entitled, and selfish person who chose to dope just like everyone who chooses this path is. I don't care how many there are. If you are a privileged person, and you are choosing to dope, I think nothing of you. I make no excuses for you. You are not a scapegoat, you are not a victim, I feel no sympathy. You could have chosen another path.
Now she's still claiming innocence. how can she think anyone but the gullible running media will believe her? If she fessed up and told the truth like everyone's already figured out what happened, there would be some closure. But now she's trying to make herself into a victim which is even more sickening. Casting doubt on the anti doping system hurts the sport tremendously. Doing it when you know you are guilty is even worse.
Well said. She could have been a clean sub-15 runner (likely), get a nice income and modest fame from the sport, but no, greed and peer-pressure did her in.
There's this notion that Sifan Hassan must be cheating. Craig Engels said he's never seen anyone tested more than Sifan. She has competed practically nonstop for 8 or 9 years now. She is not afraid to be tested. Contrast that with Houlihan, who rarely competed.
Sifan has said, "test me every day". Now, if she was tested every day and never tested positive, would all you accusers eat any crow? I doubt it.
The net result: Houlihan is given a pass because she is just trying to keep up with all the cheaters. If this is how you feel about the sport, why watch it at all?
Bowerman needs to address this now that all the appeals are done. The entire episode has made them look like they condone doping. The silence from BTC is deafening. Shelby should no longer be coached by Schumacher or Flanagan, she should no longer be part of the team. I assume BTC will stay silent hoping it will all go away until 2025 and then say something like everyone deserves a 2nd chance.
Can we please get an apology from the brosjo for their inexcusable enabling and support of the convicted cheater Shelby, the known cheater Radcliffe, and all the other cheaters with whom they are so enamored?
I have to say the continued denial of the facts makes it so much worse for her. It also makes me suspicious of the rest of BTC which isn't fair.
That said I just caught up on the article about GDS departure. Totally support that decision but she couldn't understand why she wasn't allowed to read privileged communication between anti-doping and Houlihan's lawyers?
What planet are these athletes living on?
Uncle P, while it may not be fair to each individual BTC member, the brand BTC is forever tainted.
I was a fan of BTC for a long time, but now I find myself looking back at each break through performance and progression BTC athletes have made over the last 15 years and wonder if they were clean.

My thoughts: The media afraid of burning her as a source, so they will coddle up to her and keep the access open.

One of the most articulate, well thought, and respectful while still holding a strong opinion posts I've read. The forum needs more of this.
