Now listen here, you saucy, saucy boy. I know what you want. You want to be known as that super talented guy who gives no f's. Who runs 16's and then lights up some puffy puff so nonchalantly w/ the boys afterward. Too cool for school.
But this is letsrun, not /r/running, and I'll be the first to tell you we don't take too kindly to saucy boys like you around here. On these mean streets only the trials of miles matter. Emaciated body, chafed nipples, and inability to make eye contact w/ strangers on the street. That's what we're about here, got it?
Lmao. Rojo, get this person a t-shirt ASAP. If this isn't Post of the Day idk what is.
so i did the mile with a friend and went out at 6 flat pace the first half with him. I think im capable of 5:20ish. My splits were 1:31 / 1:28 / 1:23 / 1:18 my goal in the next one is to go out in 1:22 and hold it
You don't seem interested in putting in the work to fulfill your potential, which is fine. That being said, why do you care what your potential is?
I was just wondering what other people think i could do off 10 miles a week. like if i just stayed at 10 miles how much would i improve. This wasn't supposed to be such a serious post lol. But yea I'm not worried at the moment about achieving my highest potential in running im just doing it to stay in good shape and race some local 5ks. plus its kind of fun to just go out and run a couple miles and stress about it to much.
thanks. my 5k pr is actually 16:46 from junior year in highschool. Freshmen year my first 5k was in the 22s. fr - 19:19 so - 17:35 jr - 16:46 sr - 16:55 (first meet) then I got stress fractures in both my feet and was out the rest of the year until track. so i know i can get back into the 16s if i put in the work and maybe i will in the future but right now that's not my goal.
A lot on here really think that you need to run insane miles to be fast. They have no perception beyond their own experience. I was able to run a 4:49 mile off about 5 mpw and zero endurance training with 2 interval sessions a week. While being a daily smoker lol and having no talent.
I was like you - I ran 16 flat in grade ten off of almost no training. It means nothing until you prove that you can train consistently for long periods of time. I spent HS coasting off my initial fitness - it meant I could run a 4 minute 1500 with a few months of track, but it also meant that I never thought I had to train. By the time I got to University I had no base and no good habits. I had some highs and lows for a few years and then the people who had talent and also had discipline to train left me far behind.
Everyone who was talking sh*t on here, thank you. I went and did a 7 mile run yesterday my longest run in 4 years.
You have no idea how high I can fly - Michael Scott
There are a number of LR’ers who derive meaning and purpose in life by being mileage scolds on here. If you dare even casually wonder about anything other than striving to increase mileage, the reprimand band will start playing.
Like many of the responders, I initially misunderstood your question. I thought you were saying, "hey, I'm this fast on 10 miles a week, how fast would I be if I trained more seriously."
But your actual question, "how fast can I get if I CONTINUE running just 10 miles per week," is much more interesting.
I'm always looking for "most return" from least amount of work. (I'm currently marathon training on three days a week, no cross-training, just three runs, 20 to 30 miles total ).
In the past, I've trained just 8 or 10 miles per week, and found I plateau very quickly, and see little or no improvement after that.
Varying the workouts might yield some small gains, but expect the answer to your question is: You won't get much faster without added volume.

You obviously have some talent. If you maintain your 10 mile weeks and increase the intensity of your runs, you could bust 18:00.
5:39 mile and 19:57 5k been averaging 10 miles a week for about 2 months and still improving a lot off this low mileage. mostly easy to moderate runs 2-5 miles.
I've had many young runners (14-15yo) who would run high 19min or low 20min 5k off of something similar to 10 miles/week.
Usually once they put in real work, for a consistent period of times, they would turn out to run 16-17 minutes. 15 minutes high for a few of them.
